**COMPLETED _ Thanks!***marriage lookup: St. Mary Magdalene Parish
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 19:58 BST (UK) »
Hello!  Looking for Ralph Clewes who married Elizabeth Harrison in May 1832.  Well, at least, that's what I am told!  Looking to find a record of the marriage.

Also looking to verify their son's birth: John Harrison Clewes, b. Feb 18, 1833 at Woolwich (is that close to Kent?)

Thanks for all your help!

Hi, yes not that far. Woolwich is part of Greater London,on the south bank of the River Thames,  but is not far from the Kent border. I think at one time it probably was part of of the county of Kent.

Wow!  Thank you everyone!
Now, is Robert and Ralph the same person?  Was Ralph a short form of the name Robert?  My Ralph was a gunner ....

Cheers

Hi Pauline

The John Clewes ( according to IGI) was born 18th Feb 1833 and christened on 6 March 1833 at St Mary Magdelen, do you think this is a different family to the one Lorraine is looking for or just a mix up with father's name?

Lorraine
Just seen your post. It looks like the same one as the occupation is the same. That would explain the Woolwich address as that was army barracks. Have you found them in the 1841 census?

Hello Jan

No, I haven't found them on the census for 1841 because about 1833 Ralph, Elizabeth and baby John shipped over to Canada.  There, they had 3 more children (MaryAnne, William and Ralph).

Canada's census returns are limited before 1851.

Gunner Ralph dies in 1847 and I lose track of Elizabeth.
