ELIZABETH LOWE, Salford?
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 23:10 BST (UK) »
Anybody out there can help with the family of my Gt. Grandmother Elizabeth Lowe, born c. 1860, daughter of Thomas Lowe, Tube Drawer. She married my Gt. Grandfather William Ward in 1882 at Bordersley, Warwickshire.  In the 1891 Census she is registered as being born in Manchester, however the following two she is stated as being born in Salford.  Cannot find her father Thomas Lowe in any census stating a Tube Drawer as occupation.  Any help appreciated.

Hi,,,I dont want to cloud the issue with my wild theories,,so bear this in mind  ;D

However,,,,there is this family in 1861
12 Divine Street Salford

Thomas Lowe 33 b 1828 brassworker b Birmingham
Harriet Lowe 25 b 1836 hoosekeeper b Birmingham
George Lowe 7 b 1854                       b Birmingham
John Lowe 6 b 1855                            b Birmingham
James Lowe 4 b 1857                         b Birmingham
Elizabeth Lowe 1 b 1860                     b Salford

RG09 PIECE 2916 FOILIO 50 PAGE 45

Bearing in mind that she gets married in Warwickshire,,,this may be because the family move back to that area sometime after the 1861 census??

now,,,cant find them in 1871,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT?

1871 Census,Glover Street,Aston,Birmingham.

Harry lowe lodger 55 b 1836 tube charger b birmingham
George lowe son 19 b 1852 tube drawer b birmingham
John lowe son 17 b 1854 tube drawer b birmingham
Elizabeth lowe lodger 11 b 1860                     b birmingham

RG10 PIECE 3134 FOLIO 58 PAGE 50

A very strange census entry....could Harry be Harriet ?
Could Harry be Thomas?
I will leave it with you,,,i could be barking up the wrong tree,,,,,like i said,,,just a theory...regards,,Mike.

Ok have you considered Thomas may have died.  I did a check and found 9 dying between 1861 and 1871 of which 6 can be discounted due to age.

I also checked the 1871 census and I found

Elizabeth  Lowe Head W 35 Warrehouse Cleaner  Manchester
Elizabeth Lowe Daught  10  Scholar                       Manchester
john Lowe   Son 7 Scholar                                      Manchester
Peter Cardwell Boarder wid  72  Past Work           Liverpool

Ref from Ancestry.co.uk   rg10/4042  folio 126 pg 67

I would lay odds that this was your family

On the 1881 census Elizabeth Snr is living alone and again listed as a widower.

Elizabeth jnr is living with her uncle

Joseph Hodson     38   head m lussy man barter?  manchester
Sarah Hodson            36   wife  m  domestic duties
David Hodson         6     son  s  scholar   manchester
Elizabeth Lowe    20  Neice  s  cotton winder  manchester
Samuel Allworth    24   Brother in law  s  railway porter  manchester

Rg11/3994 folio 13  page 20 and continues on folio 14 page 21

Hope that helps ya out and explains why you cant find Thomas as a pipe drawer.

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my initial message.  Will have to study all the info. posted by you good people, but you can see where I have had problems locating the right family, there seems to be a great many Lowe's in and around the Lancashire area, and the family in Aston, might be the correct one as well, and I think its probably correct to say Thomas Lowe may have popped his clogs at an early date and so not appearing in later censuses. Elizabeth Lowes marriage certificate unfortunately doesn't give any clues to her profession atall and is blank.  Any further info. anybody finds will be most welcome, thanks to all again.
