Apologies: Lewis family search helpers
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 23:00 BST (UK) »
Help! Still looking for family in Canada.

I am embarrassed. :-[

It looks like the family I have been searching for may not be Lewises, but Freemans.  I was misled into thinking it was a paternal uncle, when it looks like it should have been a maternal uncle.

Apologies to all who have given their time and tried to help.

I am still trying to find the daughters of John and Eliza Lewis, but cannot get beyond 1871.

Hi LH,

I don't know if any vehicle license records have ever been made public - I've never heard of any.  It sounds like you are looking for someone that was in Vancouver in the 1940s/50s.  There are very, very few records from that time available due to privacy laws but one option is the city directories.  Some have been digitised (http://www.vpl.ca/bccd/index.php) but sadly not for the time period you are seeking.

However, if you post some details - names, occupations, addresses or areas of the city etc - I can have a look through the directories the next time I am in the library.  I can't guarantee a delivery time on this service but I'll get to it as soon as I can.   ;D

Thanks for trying to help.

From the old photos  the Lewis familywere not city dwellers . They lived and worked on a farm and grew sweetcorn, which probably doesn't narrow it down much. and still used horses to work the fields.

Apart from a few old photos, I have no documentary evidence or info to narrow the search.
Using the car plate was clutching at straws.

Appreciate the contact.

Regards

LH

Well, that does make it difficult.  However, there are some things working in your favour - the first being that there weren't that many people living in BC in the 1940s.  I think the population today is only around 4 million and that has probably doubled in the last 20 yrs.  So the BC Directory actually includes the residents of most of the main towns in the province.  The second is that there are two main corn growing areas around Vancouver - Richmond is now considered a suburb of Vancouver but when my grandparents lived there in the 1930s, it was entirely farmland.  The second is Chilliwack in the Fraser Valley, about 80kms east of Vancouver.  They honestly grow the best corn I have ever eaten!  And lastly, most people emigrating to BC settled near the larger towns because most of our province (even today) is completely inaccessible.  Mountains and trees everywhere!

So I don't mind having a look for a Lewis or two while I do other searches in the directories but I would need at least a first name to start with.

Hi,

I have been doing a bit more research into B.C. licence plates.
I am pretty sure that the car was registered in the Victoria district in 1940.
The photo has come out poorly on screen, but the original is clearer.
There is a second plate with BC 1940 CL above the number 8026.
I have been unable to find any info on this, but I thought it might narrow the geographical search area.
Thanks again for your interest and help.
