missing g.grandfather-John Christina
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 23:49 BST (UK) »
Need some help please.
John Frank Christina born 18 November 1848 came to NZ from Trento, Northern Italy( then Austria) in 1868, married in 1884 in Dunedin, naturalised in 1887, had a family .He left home and family from  Onehunga Wharf in about December 1913 bound for Australia??To which port do not know!He had said he was going to go back to Italy to see his mother, so may have gone there later.Letters where received until 1916 from Australia then nothing was heard from him again.I searched most online indexes, passenger lists etc for NZ and OZ for him from 1913 on. Any suggestions please for passenger  lists going to Oz from Onehunga and for leaving Australia for Europe/Uk 1916 on. Possibly he was interred  as an alien in Australia?
Love to here your ideas

Hi Bona

Looking at the NZ Marriage Index, there is just the one marriage for the surname CHRISTINA -  1884  John CHRISTINA to Bridget HASSEN - obviously the John you mention.

However, the NZ Birth Index records (and again, the only listings for "CHRISTINA") -  children in 1885 & 1887 whose parents are given as John Charles CHRISTINA and Bridget. (Also 1888 - Ellen May CHRISTINA - parents listed as John and Bridget).

*   Is John Frank CHRISTINA, the same person as "John Charles"  ??

Hi Lu,
Thanks for reply. Yes it is the same person ,must be an error somewhere along the line. The surname after a time became Christini , I think the first three or four of Bridget and John's children were Christina and after that they became Christini. Charles Albert is my grandfather, but I have noticed the date for his birth in the NZ Birth Ihdex is incorrect . It says 1941 but it shold be 1898. John was always known as Christina. His name in Italian was Giovanni or Johan Francesco Cristina or De Cristina.

John Christina left NZ in Dec 1912, not 1913 as stated in previous post.

Hi Bona

Unfortunately, there are very few passenger lists available for trans-Tasman voyages, at any time (as you have probably already learned ?)   :(

Sometimes the names of departing passengers were listed in the shipping columns of NZ newspapers  ... or they might have appeared also in OZ newspapers under "shipping arrivals", but this was by no means, the "norm".   Often too, it was only the names of cabin passengers who were mentioned, and those travelling steerage class weren't noted.

There are currently no newspapers online, which cover Auckland for the year you are seeking.     So can only really suggest that it may be worth doing a search on the Australian newspapers site ?

Hi Bona

Seems that Charles Albert's birth was not registered in 1898 (I can't see it there as CHRISTINA or CHRISTINI or variants) and that he has in fact registered it himself in 1941.   ( I have a simlar case in one of my families - 12 children born in a remote settlement in Westland - none officially registered at birth.   The eldest born 1870, registered her own birth in 1929 ... probably so she could later have a claim to a pension of some type.)

John Frank Christina born 18 November 1848 came to NZ from Trento, Northern Italy( then Austria) in 1868, married in 1884 in Dunedin, naturalised in 1887,

He  Possibly he was interred  as an alien in Australia?

As John had been naturalised in NZ in 1887, then on arrival in Australia, he would have been accorded the same rights as any other British subject.

Hi lu,
Yes, it is quite frustrating that there are no passenger lists for this particular period!
John was 63 when he went to Australia, I wonder if he ever applied for the pension over there or if he would have been entitled to one? Was there a reciprocal arrangement back then between NZ and Australia??
He had about 200 pounds with him when he left though I guess that would have lasted some time back then!!
Does anyone on board have any knowledge about the pension system back then? Are there lists for example.
I thought when WWI broke out any one who had previously been a citizen of a country allied with Germany, even if they were Naturalised was considered an ailen enemy???Thoughts please?

Hi Bona,

Umm, I'm fairly sure that when WW1 started that Italy was allied with Britain, and was thus an enemy of Germany.   JM

just as an aside for spelling
in the 1915 war census, the family name is spelt CHRISTINI
eg, Daniel and Frank have mother Mrs B Christini listed as NOK
living Mt Albert, Auckland
