The picture is obviously of the 42 mile camp. Now I would guess that it would most likely be on a journey either from Perth to Albany or Albany to Perth.
I would personally go for the latter because travellers from perth to albany usually made their first stop just across the Swan river at what is now Victoria park (this was so that they could dry out thier belongings after the river crossing). The second stop was usually at what is now Armadale some 30km 20 mile south. the third night although about the correct distance would have been in heavy jarrah forrest whereas the picture appears to be in medium scrub.

Thanks very much fo the information - all very interesting. Some nice people on the Australia board have done some research for me and Joe is buried at Karrakatta which I believe is in Perth:

The age is slightly wrong, as he was born in 1846, but it's definitely him as I found his baptism record which lists his middle name and his parents. At some point Joseph also lived in Subiaco and was a sail maker. It is great to get such details when a few days ago all I had was a photograph!
