Boyces Street Brighton
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 03:36 BST (UK) »
A family I am researching spent about 50 years living in Brighton from 1850-1900.  They moved around Brighton quite a bit.  I'm trying to plot on an 1881 Map of Brighton the different places they lived and the corresponding years they lived at various places, plus significant events while living at these places.  Have managed to find all but one residence.  One child was born in 1875 at 28 Boyces Street Brighton.  Could someone give me an idea of where this is.  I have been told that the street still exists today, but can't seem to locate on the map I have.

Regards Kaybron

It's a very short street, (I frequently go to Brighton & often walk along it)  the south side still has some old buildings.

This site has many photos of old Brighton

Thank you Woody32 and Jill for both replying.  I did not think to try Google Maps.  The 1881 map I have has a couple of small lanes running between West Street, Middle Street and Ship Street that are unmarked.  The photos from the James Gray Collection are very good. They give a fantastic overview of Brighton.  The family I have been plotting lived at 9 Boyces Street.  I originally thought it was 28 but I was using the number that was written in the column number from the birth registration certificate.

The 1881 census names 3 families living in number 9 Boyces Street.  The Springs, The Cookes and The Shellys.
More inportantly it states that number 8 was the Full Moon pub, and as the houses are numbered consecutively, any picture you can find of the pub may include a piece of house number nine next door.

Hi Jill,

Thank you for taking this photo.  Fantastic.  I really appreciate the effort you have gone to with my request for help.  I will certainly use this in the research folder on the family I am putting together.

Regards Kay

My pleasure Kay, it was no effort as it was on my route, as we had lunch in the next street.
