GLOVERESS in Bideford COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 08:08 BST (UK) »
Hi :),

Hope someone can shed a little light here please?

I'm looking for any members of the Gloveress family in Bideford.  I have  Fanny Gloveress born 1866 and a John Henry Gloveress born 1872.

Fanny is my main issue because I have doubts as to whether her maiden surname was Gloveress but then I found John Henry so it is possible,

many thanks,

Pip :D

Where did you find Fanny's maiden name, and who did she marry?  The birth registration for John Henry is the only GLOVERESS surname anywhere on Free BMD, and there is no family with this surname on any census.... ???

Hi Rambler,

Fanny's son was born in Salford, on his birth certificate it says that her maiden surname was Gloveress but there is no father listed.  I'm just trying to rule out her being in Bideford to make sure I am following the correct line.  I could only find John Henry too, but thought someone might know something I didn't (parish records?).

I reckoned maybe she was a gloveress - maker of gloves and put that down - the census does say she was born Salford - but I had to be sure before I carry on with that research,

Sorry to waste your time :-[

I think it must be a mistake, as you say - what name does her son have on the birth cert?  Have you found them on census?  (That might confirm whether she made gloves or had a similar occupation.)

Hi Pip, glove making was an well known home occupation in Bideford and Torrington and the surrounding villages even in the 1940s when I lived there, the factory would send the cut sections out to women who sewed them together in their own homes and were paid a pittance for doing it.
Fanny could have lived anywhere within 10 to15 miles radius of Bideford.

Bill.

Hi Rambler,

Her son has her surname Dix on his birth certificate.  Fanny is on the 1881 census as an Ag Lab and Frederick (her son) was born 1882.  On the 1891 England census - Fanny is a wool weaver ??? Did she take in gloves to be made as bill says?

Hi Bill :),

hhmmm!...............Fanny was only 16(?) when her son was born.  I think it is more likely to be that they were all born Salford (so the bmds and an****ry say) and she 'spun' a few yarns to overcome the shame (if that is what it was) of having an illegitimate child!

I can't connect them to Bideford apart from Fanny saying her maiden surname on her son's birth cert was Gloveress.

I have been to Bideford - from my recollections a few years ago, having coffee in an old pub near the bridge!

Fanny is on all the censuses as Fanny DIX (unmarried), born Salford/Chipping Norton, and there is a corresponding birth registration:

Births Dec 1866
DIX  Fanny
Chipping N. 3a 660

In addition, her son is registered as DIX, so I think you're safe in assuming that GLOVERESS is a red herring... ;)

I remember this family from a previous search now - there's a whole tribe of them living together, and Fanny seems to be the illegitimate daughter of Hannah DIX.  (But the birth cert should confirm that.)

Thanks for your time Rambler :),

You're right about the other thread and I did get the birth certs.  Now I feel confident that I am on the right track.  :D

Cheers,
