Anyone going to National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh?
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 20:29 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

The eight volumes of "Catalogue of Manuscripts Acquired Since 1925" is not online or available in my local library, but I have found several "snippets" which index items dealing with Merchants at Ullapool in Coigach, I'd appreciate if any kind soul could take a boo at them for me.

Chief of interest is trying to untangle two "Murdoch MacKenzie" merchants, possibly father and son, as one is "Sr" and the other is "Jr", though that might only mean one was older than the other.

Many thanks,

Donald.

Primarly Coigach, but also other parts of Ross and Cromarty.

Hi, I am new to this chat line but I am looking for information on Murdoch Mackenzie (B. abt. 1775 Camden England) who presumably died in England after three days of illness in Nov 1821. I believe his parents may have been William and Helen who remained in the UK but this unconfirmed at this point as this information was recently provided to me. The information that I have been able to verify is that he was a merchant for a time in Halifax. He was possibly working with the "Hill Brothers" but not yet documented. He married into the "infamous" Cleveland family of Halifax and New England: there is a marriage records for John Murdoch and Mary Burke Cleveland in 1804 and birth records for children in Nelson Miramichi NB Canada. The Hills and Cleveland families were very close. Also there is a transfer of property from William Cleveland to Mary Mckenzie and her children after Murdoch death. His estate about ten years to settle.
I am wondering if this is the one and the same Murdoch. If so, he would be my 4th great grandfather.
