Hi.
My Great grand parents were Fred and Elsie Gosling. They lived at 91 Cherry Tree Lane. They moved to that address from Shaw Meadow. They had three daughters Elsie (my grandmother), Margaret (who moved to New Zealand) and Joan.

Hi Clownelad, we’re undoubtedly related but I’m away from my tree at the moment so I’m not sure how. Fred’s mother, Margaret (Maggie Magee), was my great grandmother’s sister. If you make a couple more posts, we can correspond by PM and compare notes.

Hi again Clownelad,
By my reckoning, we are third cousins once removed although I've not brought the Gosling part of my tree that far forward.

I think Eisie (May) married twice. I assume you're descended from her first husband George Daniels  as she was 42 when she re-married. I've no idea why but I have a postcared from her father to her during WW1 when she was living at Bank Billiard Rooms in Stockport Market Place.

This is your Great Great Grandmother Margaret Gosling (Magee) at her (silk) spinning wheel - presumably at 91 Cherry Tree Lane.

Hi Ray T.
Thank you for the info and photo. I seem to recall seeing this.
Elsie May did indeed marry twice. Firstly to George Daniels who died in the early 1960's and then to David John Arnott. They married in Worksop at St John's Church. I think Elsie would have been 52, not 42, as Her eldest son Kenneth was born in 1930 and this ties in with Her getting a postcard from Her father during WW1. I remember him telling me that He was shot in the shoulder at the battle of the Somme.

Yes, I’ve also seen the photograph elsewhere but the one I’ve posted is one I scanned from an original print.

I know it’s almost 19 years since Manchester Rambler’s original post but, for the record, I don’t think that the Gosling family was historically involved in silk weaving. Walter gosling was a hatter, the silk weaving element came when he married Margaret Magee. If anyone’s particularly interested, I can spell it out but the Magees originally came from Ireland and settled in Manchester. From there they moved to Macclesfield and eventually upped sticks once more and moved to Stockport.

Yes, 52. This is Elsie May's mother by gaslight - (circa. 1972)

Hi Ray T
It sure is Elsie. If I remember correctly this clipping is from the Stockport Express. It wasn't the whole house lit by gas though. If I stayed there we went to bed using candles. Elsie May's first son Kenneth,(my Father), was born there. It must have been a crowded house as the weaving shop was never altered. I was brought up by Elsie May and a few years after that photo Fred and Elsie came to live with us before they passed away.
