ROBERT HARDWICK - BOSTON
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 09:14 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Can anyone find Robert Hardwick on the 1891 census for me please.
He was born in 1854 in Boston and married Kate Mary Tillson in 1883 in Bourn.
His marriage certificate gives his occupation at butcher.  There should also be a daughter Nellie born 1886.

Nellies birth cert. shows her mother as Kate Hardwick nee Tillson, but has no mention of the father.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Pat

Hi Pat

Can't find any of them with a quick look, but did notice on FreeBMD that Nellie's name was Nellie MASON Hardwick, so I wonder if that is a clue to her father (and that he's not Robert Hardwick).  Maybe Kate and Nellie are living with someone, somewhere called Mason.

There is a Robert Hardwick bn Boston age 45. occ cordwinder, (I think this should be cordwainer- shoe maker), mar Jane, 5 children- 4 sons and daughter called Lilly age 21
1881 census has this Robert as born middlesex and son Robert M Hardwick bn Boston 1872
1881 has a Robert W Hardwick bn 1859 at Bourne ag lab
Confused? Take your pick. I think you may have a mix of info.

1861 and 1871 have a Robert HARDWICK/HADWICK aged 9 and 19 born Boston.

Presumably, marriage certificate would give Robert's father's name.

Since we are in Bourne district, why not this one?

Births Jun 1854
HARDWICK    Robert         Bourn    7a   315

1861 suggests he was born Market Deeping, son of Espin John HARDWICK and Sarah Ann Whesson CONINGSBY who married in London 1849.

He was married and living in Yorks in 1881, a draper and died there in 1889 (33).

Many thanks to Lizzie, Beady and Geoff,

This is a very strange one.

There is a marriage certificate for Kate Mary Tillson and Robert Hardwick in Kirton in 1883..Robert was a butcher and his father William a cottager.

Nellie was born 1886.

In 1891 and 1901 Nellie appears to be living with Frances and James Sykes in Kirton Holme as their daughter.

When Nellie married in 1909 in Kirton Holme she gave the name Nellie Sykes Hardwick.

James Sykes was a witness at the marriage of Nellie's parents Kate Mary Tillson and Robert Hardwick.

As this line of the family is being researched by another family member I am not quite on top of all the facts.  It seems to me that Robert Hardwick may have died (no one has found a death yet)

Cheers,

Pat.

Marriage Sep quarter 1873 at Boston (ref 7a   693), between James Sykes and Frances Tilson, so it looks as though Nellie was living with her aunt and uncle.  Doesn't explain where her parents were though.

Interestingly given that Nellie was Nellie Mason Hardwick on her birth certificate, there is a birth and death of an Ada Mason Hardwick as follows:

Birth Dec 1886 Spalding
Death Mar 1887 Bourn

Perhaps a sister of Nellie.

Do you have proof that Robert was born in Boston, his birth certificate for instance, stating he was from Boston on a marriage cert, doesn't mean he was born there.  The reason I ask is that there is a Robert Hardwick on the 1901 census, who was born in Holbeach about 1852 living in Grimsby with a wife Betty S Hardwick.  His occupation is given as Pork Pie Maker working from home on his own account.

Regarding the Mason name on Nellie's birth cert.  I can't find any births for Frances or Kate Tillson (or Tilson), but there are births in 1856 and 1860 respectively in Lincolnshire for Frances and Kate Mason.

Still not found another marriage or a death for Kate.
