Frank Bertram Boys

I have an uncle, Frank Bertram Boys, who died in WW2. I have some information.

Service No. 5891449
Reg: 2nd Btn Gloucestershire Regiment
Died 29/8/1944 aged 22.
Buried: Hermanville War Cemetery. (8 ml north of Caen, France)

From when he died and where he was buried I imagine he was involved in the Normandy Landings which commenced on 6/6/1944.

Could someone please tell me what I could expect to find out if I obtained his military record? How do I find out how his regiment was involved in Normandy Landings.

Does anyone have access to any online information that could throw more light on his service?

The 'Glosters' are a reasonably well documented Regiment with a museum in Custom House, Gloucester Docks.

Their website - http://www.glosters.org.uk/ includes a timeline that confirms the 2nd Batttalion landed on 'Gold Beach' on D Day and gives a little bit of background information on the landing and the campaign through June/July/August

Information in Service Records varies - but suggest if you go for it (and you have to be next of kin - or have the permission of the nok) you ask for a photocopy of all pages 

There is a pretty good WW2 Forum called WW2Talk at http://ww2battlefields.info/ - (go into WW2 links - then WW2Talk at the top of the page) might be worth searching to see if you can find any reference to the Battalion already discussed - or post a question yourself

His service number indicates that he originally enlsited in the Northamptonshire Regiment.

I believe that the date of the Risle Crossing corresponds with the date of death.
