Birth Cert for someone born in Germany

Hi,
Where would I apply to, or find out how to go about looking up a birth Cert.
Frederick Dredger b1854
Born Thornin Deutschland, british subject.
Where do I start, many thanks.

This is before state registration. You would need to know if they were Catholic or Protestant. Then you would need to write to the parish church and ask for a copy of the registry entry. This guide from the LDS should help you get started:

For more assistance go to the Europe board. They are very helpful. If and when you get a parish record copy you will probably need their help any way to read it. Old German handwriting (Sütterlin) is very difficult to read!
