I presume that your Grandfather wanted to settle in Canada, which was why he went there in the first place. When war was declared I believe that the men in Canada who wished to enlist then had the option of either serving in the newly formed Canadian Army or serving in the British Army. If, as seems likely, your Grandfather was keen to get involved then he may have opted to join the British Army as being the quickest route to get into the fight. Alternatively he might have had brothers, cousins, etc. who he knew were enlisting back here in the U.K. and may have wished to serve alongside them. Once the war was over then he was free to return to his new life in Canada that the war had interrupted.

Hi Thanks for the input Sadly he thought all his brothers were dead. But found his brother in wwI and he never crossed paths with him. He also was in the Royal Engineers. Didn't quite know why he chose that route. Didn't know if the canadians had an army in WWI.  Al b

Hi Al
Heres a link to search for Canadian Great War Records if you have any other Canadian Rellies that may have served?
You can view their attestation forms free online.

Will check out that link. He could have joined the wrong army by mistake. Seems like he wanted out of UK and ended up back there.
