Insufficient information given

Was he born in Edinburgh or did he just live there

The West Midlands is a large place - whereabouts??

Was he married - if so to whom and did they have children

What census do you already have him on to save wasting time looking

Carole, he appears in the 1871 Warwicks Census, Barr Buildings, Whitehead Street,Aston, John Forbes 66 b.1805 Scotland. wife Ann 38 b.1833,Tividale,Staffs.  Henry 19 b.Brookwalls,Derbys. John 12  b.Warwicks, ditto Mary 10 & Sarah 5.  1861 Warwicks, he is b.1821,Edinburgh,Scotland, Mary b.1831, Yeovill, Staffs, Alice b.1850 & Henry b.1852 both Derbys, and John b.1854. He is possibly dead by 1874 when Henry is married to a Mary Ann Corbett. His wife was Mary Ann Dukes, mar'1855. There is a John Forbes 19, b.1822 Scotland with parents, John Forbes 58 b.1783 & Jane Forbes same age, both born Scotland in the 1841 census, Rancliffe Street, St Peters,Nottingham which could possibly be them(no occupation). All glassworkers, Henry.F.Forbes moved to Glasgow with his family in 1900.

Hi

Now that's the type of info that should have been in your original post.

However - as you seem to have all available census info - can you clarify exactly what it is you need help with

Quote
anything at all on an Edinburgh glassmaker, John Forbes, early 1800s ,who moved to the West Midlands

Are you looking to go backwards to find his parentage etc or are you looking for living descendants of his children

You say he married Mary Ann Dukes in 1855 but the 1861 shows son Henry was b 1852 and daughter Alice 1850.  Alice was Alice Dukes not Alice Forbes according to the 1851 census and Henry was Henry Dukes according to freebmd 1852 entry

The 1851 shows Mary Ann Dukes was single so both Alice and Henry were illegitimate

There is a 16yr difference in his age between the 1861-1871 census so if you want to trace his ancestry you will need to buy a copy of his marriage cert to find his fathers name and also his age at that time

Daughter Sarah b 1865 is in Marston Green Cottage Homes Warwickshire in 1881

Possible death

Deaths March qtr 1880

Mary Ann Forbes aged 44  Birmingham  6d 139

Thanks Carole, I know census info' can be very misleading, the Forbes/Dukes stuff, I knew about. It is backwards I am looking and had hoped to find a glassmaking family of that name, only a few places in Scotland were engaged in glass production and the census gives Edinburgh in this case. I will try for the English Death Cert' I'm a newbie at this caper and your points are well taken. Many Thanks......Skoosh.

Hi

The English death cert will not give you any info that will enable you to trace his parentage.

The 1855 marriage cert is your best bet as it will show his fathers name and occupation and if it is John - there is a good chance you have the right 1841 entry

Carole,  just to confuse matters, there is a John Forbes in the 1851 Census, age 29 tailor journeyman, a prisoner in Birmingham.

I can't see that entry on Ancestry - what is the reference

1861 and 1871 he was a glassblower - seems unlikely he would be a tailor in 1851

l have a Andrew Forbes b 1801 Edinburgh Scotland. His occupation was Glassmaker and married 1820 to Mary Lowbridge.
He died in Birmingham Warwickshire 1854.
l have his parents as John Forbes b abt 1769  (Blacksmith) and Margaret Bruce b.abt 1773.

Do you think there may be a connection? . As yet l have found no siblings for my Andrew.

l have the 1841 census for Andrew, but haven't got any others, if anyone could help here please.

Thanking you,
Skurrie
