Hi tracn4

Have you already checked the NZ Birth index (online) ?

I had a look for John Ivan SMITH (between 1895 and 1905)
but found nothing.   :-\

Perhaps he was born outside of New Zealand ?

His NZ marriage record would include parents names and is perhaps the best source of information, given that John Ivan would have supplied those details himself.
[His death record should also state his parents' names - but bear in mind, that information has been supplied by a "third party" - the informant to his death  - who may or may not, have got the details correct.]

Hi lucy2

Yes I've searched the bdm records for him with no luck :( only found his death reference
My nana is certain he was born around the hamilton area, but maybe she's wrong :-\

I found the reference to his marriage at the library but it's outside the timeframe of years they have online on bdm so am I still able to order a copy or will I have to wait?
I'm not really sure what the rules or requirements are

Thanks for helping me with my queries its most appreciated :D

Hi tracn4

Yes, that marriage is "only just" outside the timeframe, but you can still purchase the record  (printout) of it, though there seems to be a "few hoops you need to jump through" in order to do so.   :D

I haven't had cause to order any myself since this new law came into force, but pretty sure all the instructions for ordering "non-historical" records, can be found on the BDM website.
