Afraid I have no idea what book the NoW reviewed as I don't get the paper but this is the latest book on the Lanc:

BTW if it's like the author's book on the Spitfire then I won't be buying it - the Spitfire one was a very superficial book.

So maybe worth finding a copy in a bookshop for a gander first.

I have just finished the said book on the Lancaster, by Leo McKinstry, and l have to say it is one of the most in depth books regarding the plane itself and its history. I have read many many books concerned with Bomber Command, and l rate this as one of the best.
Travelling home from the Lincs Lancaster Association day at Coningsby yesterday l remarked to my friend that l have always had a bit of tunnel vision about the Lanc and Bomber Command but after seeing the fantastic Spitfire display l have nothing but respect for the fighter boys and the skill they had to fly those awesome machines. I now intend to read something on the Spit`....can you recommend a good one KYT??? Incidentally we were treated also to a flypast from the mighty vulcan...STUNNING.

And a postscript regarding that author, l have read his books about the Charlton brothers and also Sir Alf Ramsey and they too were very in depth so l am very surprised he has written something superficial, but KYT l bow to your better judgement.

Very interesting....thanks for the details of the book. My Dad's cousin flew a Lancaster in WW2 and flew the Lancaster in the BBC documentary made in 1984 about the bombers.

I'm sure there are some of our family who will be most interested to read this book.

Hi KYT, noticed you have not been back to the thread, would still like your advice on a good "SPITFIRE" book.

Sorry Steve, I haven't been back to RC since I posted the above - have been rushed off my feet with setting up a forum (I hate doing techie stuff :( )

Anyway, the reason I was unhappy with the Spitfire book is probably a reflection of my expectations. Though I may sound pompous, I have a very large library, with a 1000+ books on the war. Because of that my needs and expectations have become a lot more technical and specific.

I already own several books on the Spitfire, including the best one out there - Spitfire: The History by Morgan and Shacklady.

So this new book came across as very perfunctory, and written in a too journalistic a way for my tastes. Maybe for someone who hasn't read a book on the Spitfire before (I hesitate to say a lay-person) it maybe a good read, especially if they don't want to know too much of the technical developments etc.

But for those people I would point out that the book also has a number of mistakes, both in the text and in the photo captions. I thought that may just have been in the HB but I have heard that these have not been corrected in the PB.

So, maybe the Lancaster book is an improvement - but with so many other books on my wishlist that I am confident of being of the quality that I require I cannot really be taking a risk on one based on the track record.

cheers
K

Thanks kyt, l will shop around and avoid that one, l dont like it when picture credits/ dates are wrong especially when you know they are wrong. I`m sure an officianado such as yourself and the many others on this board would spot them a mile off.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Steve.
