Policeman ID
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 19:51 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help in identifying the policeman in this photograph.   Do you think that this is a photograph of a policeman in Liverpool?  The reason I think so is the "L" beside the number on his collar.   However I could be completely wrong, it is really a bit of a wild guess.

I found the photo in my grandmother's photographs and can remember her telling me about an uncle of hers who was a policeman and I seem to recall he was called McArthur.

However I also know that a relative called Cairns was also a policeman in Liverpool although another elderly Cairns relative living in Liverpool tells me he does not think it is a Cairns but seems to recall seeing the photograph before somewhere.

Happy to receive any advice anyone can give me.

Brina

Hi,

This doesn't help with the uniform ID, but here is a link to Lancashire Record Office 'police search' which covers 1840-1925

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/record_office/records/policesearch.asp

I tried the surname search and you get more than one result for both the names you mention  :D  so if all else fails, you could contact them with a copy of the photo and the full names, it says they welcome email queries!

Good luck

Hi Brina

Is it more likely that the L stands for L Division?  I think there would have been more than 89 police who went before this fine chap in a city the size of Liverpool.

I could, of course, be L Division, in Liverpool.

Hi Brina

It is not a Liverpool Police cap badge. If you send the photograph to the email address at the bottom of this link - http://www.britishpolicehelmet.co.uk/id2.html - I am sure he will be able to tell you.

Ken

Hello Brina
Just in case he is a Manchester police force member . I would suggest you e mail police.museum@gmp.police.uk and they may identify the uniform . I am aware that they have an L division in Manchester and that was Wigan division . but I am not sure when divisional letters were introduced .
In the meantime I think MIGKY is the man with the knowledge of Manchester members .
Regards
Eric

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.   I will first of all take Ken's advice and contact on the website he provided.   It seems clear now that it is not Liverpool.   I suppose I was grasping at straws a bit when I saw the L on the collar of the uniform.

If I get any information I will let you all know.

In the meantime many thanks.

Brina

Hi all,

Just had it confirmed that the helmet is Glasgow City Police.   Sorry to bother everyone on this section.   I am now awaiting word from the curator at the Glasgow Museum Archives.

Out of interest I will post a name if I happen to get one.

Thanks to all for their help.

Brina ;)
