HEIC 1857-1859/60
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Quite some time ago I posted a request for my great grandfather William Woodruff, who joined the HEIC in 1856 in Liverpool and was then transferred to 3rd Reg of Foot (The Buffs) after 1859 in Bombay.

I got a reply from someone who told me that there was an alias against his name. I wondered if that kind person could help with the details again as there is no record for William Woodruff at Kew. I wondered would he have used his 'alias' which may have been his real name, and then decided to revert to the William  Woodruff, which I must say he used until the day he died.

I can try again to research the alias name and see where it takes me.

Many thanks,

Kind regards,
Calmar

Hi

I think this is the topic you refer to, from 2006

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,180765.0.html
".........he's on the medal roll for the Indian Mutiny 1857-59.
Entry reads:
William Woodruffe, Private, 3rd Bombay EI, Central India, also Woodcock

The entry being referred to is in the database here (search under WOODRUFFE)

Hi Ambly,

Yes I sent for  the Attestation Papers from British Library. There seems to be a lot of confusion now as to what he called himself on entering the British Army, although on  census from 1871 in Kent when he is in the army, and births of children plus his marriage and death certificate, he calls himself William Woodruff.

I am now trying to get his papers from Kew but couldn't find him. I really need to know what he enlisted as, Woodruff or Woodcock, so that I can get details of his birth/parents and place of birth and army record. He has disappeared into the ether before 1857! ::)

When his 1st child was born in Gibraltar in 1864 he is in 27th Battalion 3rd Reg of Foot, but later and to the end of service, he was in 2nd Battalion 3rd Reg Foot. On that record I am told by GRO that the words 'struck off' are in the index next to the birth records. I haven't a clue what that means.

What a puzzle this man is!

Regards,
Ca;mar
