Morriston Cemetary Thomas THOMAS b. ~1801

Hello I was reading some of the other posts concerning burials and someone refered to Morriston.  My 2 greats Grandfather Thomas THOMAS b. ~1801 and his wife Jemima were living in Morriston in the 1851 census with grandson Thomas Davies.  Can't find them after that so wondered if look-ups for Morriston cemetary were available or are other cemetaries nearby?  I think they were C of E.  There is another Thomas and Jemima about the same ages-mine is in Llangafelach with Eleanor in 1841.  Two maiden names to choose from for Jemima --Harris and Griffith Thank you for help and suggestions   Thomas Thomas was a butcher.

Morriston Cemetery didn't open for burials until 1915 a little too late for your Thomas Thomas.
There a quite a few burial grounds in the Morriston area, Llangyfealch Church, Mynyddbach Chapel, Caersalem Newydd, Sion Newydd.
Do you know if they were"Church or Chapel"? it may help to narrow the search

I believe their daughter Eleanor was bap. in Swansea in 1823 parents Thomas and Jemima but the date is a little off for census  It was the church    Eleanor married John Davies at Llangafelach  Church in 1844.  Thomas also married church I believe.   have pics of headstones at Llangafelach from visit in 1990 but the  many Thomas Thomas I recorded were not married to Jemima  Jemina was about the same age as Thomas approx 1801.   Hope you can help with this  Thanks  LizR

Hi Liz,

According to 1851 census your Thomas' are living in the centre of Morriston the nearest burial grounds were Horeb (now demolished) & Seion Newydd, both non conformist chapels.
Unfortunately the burial records for Seion Newydd are nowhere to be found
I can't find any burial records for Horeb listed at Swansea archives
The nearest C of E Churchyards were Llangyfelach & Llansamlet.
I can't find a burial for a Jemima Thomas at Llansamlet
There is a Jemima Thomas, of Morriston, buried at Llangyfelach on 20 Nov 1859 aged 66 years.
I've checked my copy of the MI's of Llangyfelach - plenty of Thomas Thomas' but no mention of a Jemima.

Thank you so much Non   It is so hard to understand an area when you haven't been there and it's changed so much.  My Mom grew up in Cardiff so I do better there.  If they weren't buried together then maybe a Thomas alone.  They had a son Thomas Thomas who is with his sister Eleanor Davies at Merthyr in 1851.  Don't have most of the siblings since they had left home by the 1841 census.  I could get a death cert couldn't I Would it have an address?  Thank you for your help   Any suggestions  I would like to find their deaths  I don't even have Eleanor's death.  Got her up to the 1881 in Cardiff on Alice Street in Butetown    LizR

Hi Liz,

Have looked through my records and found a Thomas Thomas of Morriston buried at Llangyfelach 30 Oct 1853 aged 52yrs.

 mentions a Jemima Thomas of Morriston being found guilty of using deficient weights on 6 Jan 1854 
could be relevant  -  I can look this up for you, but I won't be able to get to Swansea Library for a couple of weeks.
Swansea death Certs that I have for 1850's don't have an exact address, just the general area.
 
Free BMD show just three deaths for a Jemima Thomas betwenn 1851- 1861 in the Swansea registration district  (which covers Morriston)

March Qtr 1853 Jemima Thomas Swansea Vol. 11a Page 354
Dec Qtr 1859 Jemima Thomas Swansea Vol. 11a Page 283 (this one would tie in with a burial in Llangyfelach)

hello  Thank you so much   Would be great if you check out the weight charges  My Thomas Thomas was a butcher.  The other Thomas Thomas and wife jemima have child Rees  Will look at my records of the censuses for more info.  The few directories available on-line don't have a listing for Thomas Thomas as a butcher but he would had to have his own shop to be listed wouldn't he??

Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you, wasn't able to get to do the look-up until last weekend.

The Cambrian 5 Jan 1854

Jemima Thomas of Morriston pleaded guilty to the charges of having been found in possession of a number of false scales & weights. There were a number of weights several drachma short. Fined for both weights & scales 16s. 6d. weights forfeited

I had hoped that the paper would have mentioned a butchers shop - sadly not to be.
