More Liverpool help please CHARTERS
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 17:17 BST (UK) »
At the 1881 census Roseanna CHARTERS widow was housekeeper to William Barrow at 2 and 4 London Road Liverpool. He was a Lic. victualler. It must have been quite a big place because there were 4 barmen and a servant. Any info in that place please.
Also Roseanna died in 1893 at 26 Tetlow Street she was the widow of John Charters. James Charters her son was in attendance, his address 33 Makin Street, Walton
I cannot find her in 1991.

Now that's a puzzle.
She was born in Sefton in 1827. and was 66 when she died in 1893. Do you think it is my Roseanna?  Why should she become head of the household with all those young people.
I'm intrigued. Was she some sort of matron.
She had been a nurse before she married.
Is the surname just a misspelling?
Thank you again.

William Barrow was the landlord of the Legs of Man in 1881. On the corner of London Road and Lime Street.

Hi Michael
Have just looked at the original age has cross right through it but it certainly looks like 63 to me and not 53.  Surname is definately Chanley - it doesn't give an occupation for her though.

In 1909 the pub belonged to Robert Cain & Son - not the current company of that name but the original.  This confirms the second of the two pics with the earlier post:  the first pic is of a later rebuild.
It was indeed a large boozer, with 1766 square feet of licensed drinking space, & 11 rooms for domestic purposes.  WG Coles was the manager in '09.

The rebuilt pub has gone too, replaced by a new extension to the adjoining Empire theatre.
I have another photo, probably from the 1930s or 40s, when the pub was advertising Walkers Warrington Ales - they succeeded the original Cains.
If you would like a copy, send me a pm with an email address.
The pub has an entry in 'A Pub on Every Corner' vol 1, Liverpool City Centre, which gives a probable origin in the 1790s, as a coaching inn.
