 Pat,

You surmised correctly- poor baby John number one
 " Burials Morpeth Parish
 4 November 1781- John son of john Purdey"

This from Image number 31 (of 724) of Durham Bishop's Transcripts.

The two John bapts are on images 29 and 33.

The John/Mary marriage is on Image 94/378 Ponteland.

Hi Blair,
Welcome to Rootschat.
Unfortunately we do not seem to have a connection at this stage as my Thomas Purdy and Isabel Reay only had 1 Son that I have discovered and 5 Daughters.

It would have been great if we did have a connection.

Trish :)

Thanks for the information, it will take me a little time to check and review each piece of this never ending puzzle.

I have often tried but never been able to link with the Purdy / Raey line, but I think something is still to be found.  To many very close similarities to be ignored.

Will keep searching, but not sure were to go next.

Thanks again

Blair

 Blair,

 Your Purdy "events" (i.e. marriage, baptisms and burial, ) were at Ponteland and Morpeth Parish churches- thus Anglican religion.

What is the context of you mentioning St George's Presbyterian church of Morpeth ?
 Did the family later change religions ?

Michael,

I have the fisches for St George's Presbyterian church of Morpeth and found my direct line showing John Purdy and Sarah Davison plus all the children.  Also located in the same time is Thomas Purdy and Jane.  The 1st group of files (1747-1806) shows no Purdy entries, the second group (1806-1848) has over 20 entries.  Maybe I should start searching other Presbyterian church records in the area prior to 1806?

Hi Blair,

Here is what I have on Thomas and Isabels children;
Christenings PURDEY, Morpeth, Northumberland, Parents Thomas and Isabel;

MARGARET, 22 October 1772
DOROTHY, 19 February 1775
BARBARA, 24 November 1776
MARGARET, 03 September 1780
ANN, 24 January 1787
THOMAS, 13 May 1793 ( my line)

Thomas Purdy married Isabel REAY, 15 December 1771, Morpeth, Northumberland

Isabel Reay was christened 17 July 1747, Morpeth, Father JOHN

I have no idea where the Christenings took place all the info is from the IGI and other descendants.
2 of the girls died young 18 August 1796 and drowned in the Wansbeck;
( I cant shrink the ref enough to fit here!)
As Dorothy and Ann married it must have been Margaret and Barbara who died but at present I have no evidence of this.

By the gaps in the Christenings there could have been other children born to Thomas and Isabel.

Back again;
If the Registers you have show Thomas and Janes children I would appreciate the Christening dates please as I have been unable to find them from here in Australia.
I must say with what I know of the NZ Purdys a Presbyterian link seems likely rather than Anglican.
My Mothers Mother was a Purdy although Mum married a Catholic!.

Children I have are;
JANE, 1819
THOMAS, 1822
ROBERT, 1823
ANNABELLA, 1825
GEORGE, 1827
JAMES, 1828 ( my line)
JOHN, 1830
BARBARA, 1834
DOROTHY, 1837
WILLIAM KEMP, 1842
( Ann Purdy born 1787 married William KEMP so that is maybe how that name appeared for the last Son)

Any Deaths would be appreciated if you have them too.

Trish :)

Historic register of Remarkable events 1796;

 AUGUST 18th 1796

" Rain had swelled the brooks and rivers and this led to tragic events. Two women of most excellent characters, the daughters of Mr. Thomas Purdy, gardener, were carried away by the current and lost. They were washing turnips by the side of the Wansbeck River when one tried to reach a piece of timber and slipped into the water. Her sister tried to save her and shared the same fate This was in the presence of their parents who could yield no assistance. The body of one young lady was found the next day and the other 3 days later 4 miles down the river. One of them was on the point of Marriage to a most industrious man in the neighbourhood. On Monday the bodies of the young women were interred together, amidst the tears of their family and acquaintances."

 Just a wee note.....

 Until July 1837, the only legal way to marry in England, Wales and Ireland, was in a Parish church i.e. Anglican church. ( Those of the Jewish and Quaker faiths were exempt from this law)

So Presbyterians etc had choice to marry in an Anglican church, not marry or marry abroad (eg, Scotland).

But there were no restrictions on baptisms in "non-Anglican" churches.
