Griffiths Valuation has a Duffin Murray renting a house, offices (ie outbuildings) and 22 acres of land in Ballee, in 1862. He is also subletting to a Mary Murray, Luke Murray & Wm Ross. There are various other Carsons in Ballee at the time too, including a Robert Carson.

Robert Carson died 11th October 1886. His will is on the PRONI website:

Go to Griffiths and enter Murray, Duffin and Antrim (county) Connor (parish). That brings up 1 entry for Duffin Murray.

Then click on “original page”. That brings up a list of all the people in Ballee in 1862 whose land rental was £5 a year or more, and who were therefore listed in Griffiths.  What I assume is your Duffin is no 43. He appears again just a bit higher up that same list as the landlord for 3 people on plot number 42. The surnames Carson & Murray appear against properties nos 35, 39, 40, 41 & 42.

If you then click on one of the map buttons, it’ll bring up a map of Ballee in the mid 1800s, and there’s a slider on the top right hand side which enables you to overlay a modern map.  (That area is all suburbs of Ballymena nowadays and the agricultural land is long gone). The railway is still there today, as is the road in from Antrim and so would act as useful markers, if you were to make a visit.

I am chasing information on David Carson, my great grandfather who was born in Drummell (according to his headstone in Terang, Australia) but it may be Drumaull (Ireland) in about 1830. He migrated to Australia in 1858 and married here the next year, to an Irish girl who arrived on a different ship. Her name was Martha Denney (or maybe Denny), possibly from County Down. Her Parents were Joseph and Sarah (nee Donaldson) and David's parents were David and Martha (nee Naird). I would like to find out if David had brothers and sisters ans if they too migrated, or stayed in Ireland. We went to Ireland recently looking for information, but it was not until the very last day that we might have stumbled on some clues, but by then it was time to come home

Hi

MY G G Grandfather was Duffin Carson b 11/2/1851 b in Ballee, Ballymena  and d 15/8/1948 his wife was Elizabeth Murray (Lizzie) m 9/8/1873 Presbyterian Church, Wellington Street, Ballymena.  Their children were
Sarah, Margaret, Jane (Jennie), Annie, Lizzie,  May and Robert b 10.11.1884 d 26.12.1983 d Christchurch. NZ  married Maudie Elizabeth Quinn b 1884 Belfast and d 6.8.1915 in Christchurch NZ my G G Grandfather there may have been other children.  I have no record of Duffins parents - but believe there cousins were also Carsons, Duffins and Murrays as surname.  Would love any information - if you find any matches that dont relate or maybe its the same family - I was told there was out of Ballymena or Ballee - a place called Carsontown that is still farmed by cousins of our Carson family and there is a communal plot where a few Carsons are buried but no names,  Any help appreciated as I have hit a brick wall.  Picture is of Robert Carson & Maudie Quinn

My Great x 4 Grandfather Charles Rankin of Ballee, Ballymena married a Nancy Carson and an Agnes Carson.  I have Agnes' DOB as being 1798 from a headstone but I don't know anything regarding Nancy or their respective fathers. They may have been sisters!
