Birth/Marriage Registers - The Lee, Chesham - OSBORN
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 11:57 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my great great great grandfather James OSBORN.

According to the 1851 Census he was born at Lee Common near Chesham in 1781.

He may have married his wife Mary there, sometime before 1816.  (Possibly in St. John the Baptist as they were C of E).  He was an ostler and his son William become one too, so James' father may well have been one as well.  That's as much information as I have.

Any help to confirm James OSBORN's birth details and the maiden name of his wife Mary would be most welcome.

Thanks

Hi Christopher

I have access to St Johns at the Lee.  There is no record of the birth of your James and no record of any Osborn/Osborne/Osbourne's marrying in that church.  A footnote says the population during this time was an unchanging 125.

This is the list of ALL the baptisms & burials

Jenny

Thank you very much for looking into this for me.  I guess that I'll have to turn my attentions to James Osborn's wife and hope that they got married in her parish.

Another mystery to investigate.

Thanks once again

The IGI has one baptism at The Lee not included in Jenny's list:

28 Nov 1779  Jas. son of James and Fanny HOSBORN

Despite the fact that his date of birth is a little out I think this could be your man.  I also think that his parent's are actually James and Susanna and that the vicar made an error when recording his mother as Fanny.  Either way, I can't find a marriage between a James OSBORNE and Susanna or Fanny in the Bucks section of the IGI.  Why not try the Buckinghamshire Family History Society's Marriage Database at www.bucksfhs.org.uk  There will be a small fee to pay but it's excellent value for money.

Thanks Orpheus

It certainly looks like a runner.  I'll follow up the IGI entry to see I can confirm the match further.  I never thought of the Susanna 'Fanny' known name element.  The boarder between Bucks and Herts in the area is quite circuitous so I'll try Herts for the marriage too.

All the best

Hello Christopher and others.
I have  just read your posts and feel that it is a definite maybe that James Osborne and Mary Peet are also my direct ancestors.  I have just found George Osborne baptised 20 June 1804 in Chesham. My 3rd GGF was George Osborne born about 1804 in Buckinghamshire. He married an Ann State and migrated in the mid 1840s to Australia on the "Cressy" and settled in the Adelaide Hills. By a process of elimination I think he must be the son of your James and Mary. Do you have any information that would confirm or deny my thoughts?

Cheers
Wendy
