1920/1930 Census William Wright in Toronto
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 14:46 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information in the 1920 and 1930 census records for William S. Wright born 1890 in England.  He married to Hilda Emily Rose in 1919 and was living in Toronto, Ontario.  By 1930 they had two children, Dorothy and Audrey.  I think his occupation was a butcher.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

The 1920 and 1930 census records for the U.S. are available but the latest Canadian census that has been released to the public is 1911 and the 1921 won't be available in the immediate future.  Canadian BMD records are protected under privacy laws and are not released as they are in other countries.  This link explains what records are available in Ontario
http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/archival-records/interloan/vsmain.aspx

You can search for Ontario obituaries and cemeteries from these sites
http://www.ontarioobits.com/
http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/

From his marriage registration available on ancestry it looks like he might have used Stanley as his first name as they shortened the William to Wm.  He was a butcher and living at 1004 Shaw St. Toronto.  Married to Hilda Emily Rose Forster 9 July 1919.  d/o Charles Forster and Emily Gibbard.

The Toronto Library has an Ask a Librarian feature and you can have them look up William Stanley in their city directories and get an idea of where he lived.  They only do 2 checks per emails but do not restrict the number of enquiries.

There  is also the pay site of the Toronto Star - Pages of the Past.  It is a searchable site for the daily paper and can be timeconsuming but sometimes very useful in finding details of BMDs since they aren't availble from other sources.

Great information Debbie.  I definitely appreciate it.  I know that Hilda's father, Charles Forster (born 1877 in England) arrived in Canada a short time prior to his wife and children.  Is it possible to find out when and what ship he came over from? He probably left from Liverpool as his family did.

Charles Forster on the Montrose, Liverpool to St. John New Brunswick, 27 March 1911.  Occupation bricklayer and intended occupation in Canada the same

You can use this link to find the passenger manifest by entering the details of the ship.   The lists are available but not indexed by name.

Ancestry records available through subscription always lag a few years behind what is publically available from the Ontario archives.  A group of volunteers have been filling in the gaps and transcribing records.  If you look at this link and scroll down to the marriage of Charles Bullock and bride Harvey you will find Dorothy Grace Forster as a witness and living at the Gamble Ave. address

Hi Again Debbie,
Again, you have given me some great information and sites to work with.  May I beg your indulgence and make one more request.  William Wright immigrated to Canada about 1912 on the S.S. Virginian leaving from Liverpool and arriving in Montreal.  Is there any way you can find either a date of departure or arrival for me?  There are several listings for arrivals in 1912 on the web site you gave me, but a date would really help.  Thank you so much.
Karen :)

When you limit it to one particular ship there are not as many choices but none that seem to be an ideal match.

6 Apr 1912 Liverpool to Halifax - is a William and his wife and children
9 Mar 1912 Liverpool to Halifax - William is one of 3 sons with parents Thomas and Mary bound for Saskatchewan
22 Sep 1911  Liverpool to Quebec - William, 19, Grocer's assistant in UK but intended occupation was farming labourer in Red Deer, Alberta
7 May 1910 Liverpool to Quebec - William, 24, labourer intended occupation gardener (with experience) bound for Toronto

Was your William on the 1911 British census?

Debbie
