Hi
I have just joined this site. I am beginning to research my family name - Welsh which originated from Longside in Scotland. It appears that my great-great grandfather John Welsh married Agnes Ritchie. From what I can see, Welsh and Ritchie are names you are interested in. My name is Bevan Welsh and I live in Auckland New Zealand.

Hi Bevan thanks for replying I am researching the Welsh Family but haven't been able to find out much info. All I have is the marriage of Agnes Ritchie & John Welsh on Jan 1 1859 in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The birth of their son James Welsh on Nov 13 1859 in Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and the death of Agnes Ritchie on Sept 7, 1870 at Daviot, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Agnes Ritchie is my Great Grand Aunt she is my Great grandfather's sister. From this Ritchie line they is another family living in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. I live in Canada and would be interested in exchanging information my e-mail is (*) hope to hear from you soon.

Did James & Agnes have any more children beside John

Hi Alex
I have only recently started looking at geneology. My father did a lot of work on the Welsh family before he died but my older brothers have not been able to lay their hands on the information he collected. I suspect it is at the bottom of a storage box in the attic of one of them! I am researching the Welsh family because it is my name and a relatively unusual name - I hope that means it is easy to trace. I don't know if John Welsh had siblings. I also don't know what year James Welsh (1) migrated to NZ. I do know that he was in NZ in 1883 because he married Charlotte Stevens on 1 August 1883 in Milton, Otago. James (1) and Charlotte had three children: Charlotte (Lottie) followed by James(2) (my grandfather) born 1892 and a third whose name I have forgotten. My father always wondered why my grandfather was reluctant to talk about his parents. He did some research as part of the work I mentioned earlier and found some disturbing facts. It seemed that James (1) abandoned the family after the third child was born. In despair, Charlotte killed herself and the youngest child. My father showed me her death certificate which put it down to 'temporary insanity'. James (2) was raised through his teenage years by his older sister Lottie. James (2) had one child (my father) Rex James Thomas Welsh, born 3 June 1923 in Riverton, Southland. Died 5 December 1999 in Christchurch, Canterbury. Rex and James (2) were both primary school teachers. Rex was in the Royal New Zealand Navy in WW2, serving on the HMNZS Achilles in 1944 and 1945. I believe that James (2) died in 1969 in Invercargill, Southland but I haven't confirmed the date. It is very frustrating to know that my father did so much work and I will put pressure on my brothers to find it all!

Hi Bevan
thanks for the update. I entered the info to my tree and have found this out.
John Welsh had 3 sister's  Jean, Isobel, MARGARET and brothers James, David, and WILLIAM. MARGARET married William Caird on Nov 7, 1864 and WILLIAM married Jessie Caird on July 22,1859. William & Jessie Caird are brother and sister. Haven't found anything on John's other brothers and sisters yet.  John Welsh's  parents are James Welsh & Margaret Strachan.
Hope you can pressure your brothers enough to find the information that your father had collected.

Hello Alex
It has been a couple of years since I was in touch - I hope this reaches you! My older brother Geoffrey Welsh has become interested in geneology and has dug out some information from my father. I am hoping to put him in touch with you. You gave me contct details at one stage but the moderator deleted it. I guess if we make initial contact on here we can work out what to do. Regards.

Birth registration for William Clark born Nov 24, 1890 at Bushlaw, Longside.
Birth registration for James Murray Clark  born Sept 6, 1895 at Thunderton, Longside.
Birth registration for John Clark born March  24, 1902 at Thunderton, Longside.

If you haven't already got them, you can get all three on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
