Was his wife the informant on his death certificate?  If so what address did she give, that might give a clue.  Where were his parents buried?  In my family I have people buried with their parents, even when they were married, then their wife and children are built in a totally different graveyard.

Where was he born, I have a family who were all buried in the village where they were born even though they spent 40+ years living in a town 20 miles away

I presume you know the exact date of his death and as you know his address at the time of death, the only info on his death cert that you might not know would be the cause of his death and the informant (if it wasn't his wife).  If he was Irish, was he Roman Catholic?  You may need to start looking at RC churches in the area.

Or it could be that he was buried in Ireland (expensive) or cremated and his ashes taken back to Ireland.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about RC churches and what they do with their records.  You could try contacting the church, or alternatively put a question on a new thread on The Common Room which is for general genealogy and local history subects.
