Find My Past - Can't view images
« on: Friday 16 October 09 18:35 BST (UK) »
I run Linux Ubuntu 9.04 on my netbook and can't view Find My Past images.  The whole image page just quivers and flashes.

It seems the enhanced viewer is only suitable for Windows or Mac.  Is there a Deja Vu player suitable for Ubuntu?

Has anyone else encountered a problem with this, and if so, how did you fix it?

Yes you should be able to get djvu viewer for Linux.

I use PCLinuxOS and I use a package manager called Synaptic.

I went into Synaptic and searched for dj viewer and it listed a number of files:

Quote
DjVu viewers, encoders and utilities
DjVu is a web-centric format and software platform for distributing
documents and images.  DjVu content downloads faster, displays and
renders faster, looks nicer on a screen, and consume less client
resources than competing formats. DjVu was originally developed at AT&T
Labs-Research by Leon Bottou, Yann LeCun, Patrick Haffner, and many
others.  In March 2000, AT&T sold DjVu to LizardTech Inc. who now
distributes Windows/Mac plug-ins, and commercial encoders (mostly on
Windows)

In an effort to promote DjVu as a Web standard, the LizardTech
management was enlightened enough to release the reference
implementation of DjVu under the GNU GPL in October 2000.  DjVuLibre
(which means free DjVu), is an enhanced version of that code maintained
by the original inventors of DjVu. It is compatible with version 3.5 of
the LizardTech DjVu software suite.

DjVulibre-3.5 contains:
- a standalone DjVu viewer based on the Qt library.
- A browser plugin that works with most Unix browsers.
- A full-fledged wavelet-based compressor for pictures.
- A simple compressor for bitonal (black and white) scanned pages.
- A compressor for palettized images (a la GIF/PNG).
- A set of utilities to manipulate and assemble DjVu images and documents.
- A set of decoders to convert DjVu to a number of other formats.
- An up-to-date version of the C++ DjVu Reference Library.

I am not sure which package manager you get with Ubuntu but the implication is that you should be able to get this browser plugin.

Thanks Pete, I was discovering that Google wasn't my friend...

Your link seems to say that I have what I need already and it just needs to be configured?

I was puzzled by the fact that you said you were going to use Google after I advised you to use Synaptic.

You should be aware that Linux is not like Windows when it comes to installing extra programs.  You need to check the dependancies of each program you want install.

You select a program you want to install in Synaptic by clicking on the Search button and typing in: dj viewer

It will then search for it and list a file if the thing you are searching for exists.  You then put a check mark next to the file you want to install and click on Reload and then Mark for Installation.

At that stage Synaptic may advise you that you require other files in order for the program to work and it will then include those other files in the download and installation process.

I'm very new to Linux and to be honest, it's not as easy as I was led to believe.  However, I followed your instructions and used the package manager to download and install the DjVu files and it still doesn't work.

All is not lost though, I have a friend at work who is a dab hand with Linux and perhaps he can have a look at what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for your help.  :)
