The elusive Hannah Skeel
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 12:31 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the parents of Hannah Skeel, born Letterston c1765, died Rudbuxton 23/11/1856. She married John Evan(s) 5/11/1975 at St Dogwells, but there are no clues as to her father from the parish register. There are lots of Skeels about at this time and she may be related to Thomas Skeel who was the founder of Zion Hill chapel at Spittal. There is a reference to her on the 1841 and 1851 censuses when she is living with her daughter and granddaughter, but no reference even on family wills to tie her in with any other Skeels.
Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Orielbenfro,
Thanks for the photo, shame it's not Hannah. I think her family must have disowned her for one reason or another. I'll try back tracking on John and Minnie.

                                 Thanks Cledwyn

From my index of Pembroke St Michael Baptism register 1901 to 2000, John William Skeels is shown as a soldier for the births of his children between 1939 to 1942 at Pembroke St Michael, full details if required.
23 Aug 1908 Minnie Elizabeth to John & Elizabeth Scarffe of the East End Pembroke a labourer baptized by Arthur S. Thomas
John & Elizabeth had a further 7 children baptized at Pembroke St Michael according to my index’s
From my index of the Mrge Reg of Pemb St Michael 1930 to 1939 I note
20 Dec 1931 John William Skeels aged 23 a Soldier of Llanion Barracks Pembroke Dock the son of Ernest William Skeels a labourer married Minnie Elizabeth Scarfe aged 23 a spinster of Slaten Rd  the daughter of John Scrafe a skilled labourer by banns in front of Henry Jame Brunsden Hall. Both signed their names in the presence of John Scrafe and Samuel O.A. Palmer.
Hope this helps you start on John William Skeels

      Hi,
Thanks for your efforts but I doubt we're talking about the same family. It would appear that John William Skeels was born in Wisbech, whereas the Skeel family I'm interested in originated in North Pembrokeshire, Hayscastle area, and probably disappeared from Pembrokeshire circa 1900.

I Chair a recently formed Hayscastle History Group. We are researching the history of the village. I have come across the surname Skeel during these researches although not your particular Hannah Skeel.
However, I have come across a Henry Skeel who leased a farm in Hayscastle from a William Scourfield in 1745 and this family remained here until he or a descendant of his (another Henry?) died in 1847. This family is thought to have reared pedigree cattle called "Skeel" and indeed there is a farm in the village even now with a sign outside displaying the words "Skeel Herd".
Our researches continue and I know who is though to be his granddaughter.
Do we need to exchange infromation directly with each other?

We have a lot of information about the Skeel family of Hayscastle which should be of use to you. There are a number of gravestones at Hayscastle churchyard which you would find very useful. We also have wills etc that you could make use of. In short, everything but Hannah!
If you are interested let me know

Hi,

It seems that it would be interesting to compare our group researches with yours (ie. I have copies of the Hayscastle Church registers here). So if you would like to send your email address to my remote email site at "buyline@tiscali.co.uk", I will contact you using my private email. Just give the subject matter as Hayscastle History. This forum prohibits the use of actual email addresses - quite right.

Regards.

I have Elinor Skeel, my gt gt grandmother, born Granston/St nicholas 1799  but cannot identify her parents. I believe her father was David Skeel but cannot prove it; they could have been non-conformists as there are Skeel baptisms listed for Rhosycaerau.
The Pembrokeshire Skeels originally came from Laugharne; read the introduction to "Marching with Thomas Skeel" by Major Francis Jones, which is available on the Internet.
You could also check the wills of Henry Skeel of Hayscastle and the Rev. Thomas Skeel which you can buy online at the National Archives.
I also have Hannah Skeel daughter of Thomas and Margaret Skeel baptised at Mathry Church in 1761; could this be your ancestor?
