COMPLETED **Glamorgan County Asylum - Bridgend
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 11:55 BST (UK) »
Whilst researching my friends family tree have found that her Great Uncle was admitted to Glamorgan County Asylum - have found him there on the 1891 census - condition states lunatic.   Did people normally come out of this place or did they live out their years there or what ?? I cant find him on 1901 census  maybe he had died by then ?? He was about 40 years old on the 1891 census.
His name was Abraham Richards born abt 1851/52 originally from Llanfinhangel Y Creuddyn, Cardiganshire, though in later years he had lived in the parish of Ystradyfodwg - his family had a drapers shop in Penycraig.
If people died at the asylum did they get buried there and if so is the cemetery still there as I understand that Glanrhyd Hospital is part of the original asylum.
I understand that if we contact the Glamorgan Record Office they may have records that we could have a look at - which we will do but just wondered if anybody here has any info ?????

Hi eac61,

From FreeBMD, there is a death for an Abraham RICHARD, age 45, registered in the 2nd Quarter 1898 Bridgend 11a 373. Personal experience in tracing my own RICHARD/RICHARDS family seems to show that the final 'S' of the surname can be pretty optional throughout the 19c.

Hope that helps. :)
