Confused - East/West Sussex?
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 22:56 BST (UK) »
Probably a stupid question but I can't seem to find the information of either web site.

Could somebody please tell me where I would go to look at the parish registers for Brighton (St Nicholas) from 1770-1812.

Hi

Brighton is East Sussex. If you google St Nicholas Brighton Parish records they seem to be housed in Brighton History Centre.

Hopefully someone may have more details.

Just as a warning, the microfilm records for St Nicholas' for this period are, for the most part, almost unreadable. Most of my Brighton lines end during this period because the records are so difficult to read. I've spent many a frustrating day sitting trying to decipher even the odd name, to no avail.

There are transcripts for all dates up to 1770 and for all dates from 1813, but no-one looks to have been brave enough to try the intervening years.

Not trying to put you off, honestly. You may be lucky.

Hi,

Thank you for the warning - I appreciate it and shall not be too optimistic about finding my lost ancestors.    Nonetheless,  I feel I have to try.  But isn't it just my luck I only have 2 in Sussex I need to find - one is in 1780 and the other 1812.

Thanks again
Sue

Hi Sue

Post the names here, and if anyone has any luck with the records, or if there are transcriptions hiding anywhere, then you may get a response.

If you can get through that time frame then the records are pretty good in general.

Thanks Glen, it's worth a try.  I will start a new thread.
