James McPeake b.1835 approx
« on: Monday 19 October 09 22:24 BST (UK) »
Looking for any leads on which area my relatives are from; I think the name is Irish; the famil migrated to Australia in 1859:
McPEAKE (MACPEAKE)

On the NSW Assisted Immigrants
Ship: Daphne - Year 1859
Arriving: Sydney and/or Newcastle
James McPeake age: 24 - so b 1835
Rosanna McPeake age: 22 - so b. 1837
Sarah McPeake age: 2 - b 1857

If I have the right record then James' parents may be John and Margaret and Rosanna's father, is James. Don't have Rosannah's maiden name. Spelling may also be Rose Ann, Roseannah, RoseAnn etc
Craig - Glasgow and Perthshire Scotland; Matthews -Lithgow,Wattle Flat NSW, Co Louth Ireland; Marshall - Broxburn, Scotland and Antrim Ireland; McVicars - Antrim Ireland; McPeake, McAtamney-Co Derry, Ireland, Wattle Flat NSW;  Evans, Richards- Cornwall, Wallsend/Newcastle.

Hi,
This is a long shot but on a subscription website which I use I find a James McPeake who married Rose Ann Mc Tamney in Greenlough Roman Catholic Church, Magherafelt Co. Londonderry on 23 Feb 1851. This is well before official Registration of Roman Catholic BDM s in 1864.

Well certainly the names match up, but if the ship recorded age of James is correct, thus making his b/date approx 1835, then this would mean he married at 16? Is that likely?
Checking this marriage record (it has no parents listed and in notes field says "Dispensation" - could that be because of young age? They arrived in Asutralia on the ship: Daphne - Year 1859
Arriving: Sydney and/or Newcastle. James 24yo, Rosanna 22yo, William John 6yo and Sarah 2yo. From Co Derry, James is a labourer and they are Romand Catholic.
So William would have been born when James was only 18 and Rose Ann 16...

Hi,
Marriage at that age was possible but, in my experience, unusual. Unsure of "Dispensation" but your explanation sounds plausible.
