Chideock - Death - Edmond Going
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 20:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there from the Chideock area who might be able to help me ...

I'm tracing a "GOING" family who lived in Chideock ( per the 1891 census). Their eldest son Edmond died in 1896 and by 1901 the family had then moved to southampton.  (Edmonds mothers maiden name  - Bartlett - also from Chideock)

I'm just wondering where someone from Chideock would most likely  be buried.
I have no idea of the dorset or hampshire area.

I'm hoping if I can find where Edmond is buried then the remainder of the family may be buried there as well ??
As far as I know this family were Catholic.

Are there any resources I could look up to find where he is buried ?

Is it possible that an obituary exists and what are the most likely newspapers archives to check ?

Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi

Looking at freebmd - Edmond's death was registered in Weymouth but Bridport was the registration district for Chideock which suggests the family may have moved between 1891-1896

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/bridport.html

There are no other Going deaths recorded on freebmd in either Bridport or Weymouth

In fact - there are only 3 deaths recorded for that surname in Dorset - John aged 76 d 1900 - Poole  and Margaret  W aged 55 d 1911 also Poole

These are the only Going deaths in Hampshire

1868 - Sarah  aged 35  Portsea  2b 278

1915  Mary R  aged 64  Southampton  2c 44

1918   Philip J  aged 67  Southampton  2c 39

1930   James D aged 60  Portsmouth  2b 681

Thanks Carolew,  I don't know any of these districts at all  - and so hadn't noticed that.

So If I'm right you are suggesting that because Edmonds death is registered in Wemouth then this family must have moved before he died ?

Mary R and Philip J Going - that you have identified below - are Edmonds parents, Their deaths are registered in Southampton. I know they lived there in 1901 - per the census.

I'm now thinking Edmond ( at the age of 20 ) may have been working in the Weymouth district  - when he died ?
When a person died must they be registered where they died  - even though they were from another area ?

thanks

Yes - it's the same procedure as today so he perhaps was working / living there at that time

cannot give any detail about your name, but, if it is any help;
There is a C of E churchyard in St Giles Church, Chideock and I
have seen a transcript of memorials for it.
There is also a catholic burial place, established by Charles Weld
as a family memorial.
try Dorset County Record Office, Dorchester for registers etc
regards
