Robert Herd - shipwrecked aboard HMS Captain in 1870
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 09:22 BST (UK) »
I am seeking details of the Robert Herd who was shipwrecked aboard the HMS Captain in 1870.

I know for fact that he had a son Richard Jeffrey Herd born in Plymouth in 1880. The mother was Julia from Ireland. Robert was listed as a Coast Guard Boatman and therefore still "of the sea".

Family letters suggest that Robert was born in Aberdeen and went to Ireland to get an Irish wife.

But the 1881 census states that he was born in 1847, Cork, Ireland.

He married Julia Daley from Cork, Ireland (as per 1881 census) and had several children, two of whom were Richard Jeffrey Herd born in Plymouth in 1880 and Robert Herd, born in 1879 also in Plymouth. Other children were Katherine, Mary.

Family story tells that a HERD family left their home during the potato famine and re-settled - was this ex Scotland or Ireland ? Was this Robert b in 1847 or maybe Robert's father?  Mary, one of Robert's daughters lists Cumberland as an address on her return to UK for a visit.

I also have an address for an Uncle Jerry Herd in New Zealand which was found in son Richard Jeffery Herd's Seaman's record book. I suggest that possibly the Jeremiah Herd in Dunedin, NZ and the father Robert Herd were brothers.

There is an 1861 census record for a Mary Hird who has a Robert (5yrs) and Jeremiah (13yrs) as sons. Could this be them or were they too young?

So to all you HERD buffs - any ideas ?

Please

This was a second marriage for Julia - she had previously been married very young to Dennis GEARY.  Here she is on the 1861 census:

RG9/1440/52/16 - 82 King St West, Plymouth
Patrick DEALY - Head - 60 - Greengrocer - Ireland
Hannah DEALY - Wife - 52 - Ireland
Julia GEARY - Dau - 18 - Ireland
Dennis GEARY - Son-in-law - 27 - Seaman RN - Ireland

1871
RG10/2120/94/23 - 87 King St, Plymouth
Julia GEARY - Head - Wid - 28 - Charwoman - Cork, Ireland
Michael GEARY - Son - 9 - Scholar - Plymouth
Dennis GEARY - Son - 7 - Scholar - Plymouth
David GEARY - Son - 3 - Plymouth

(There are several other families at this address, including Julia's parents.)

Marriages Dec 1858
DALY   Julia
GEARY   Denis
Plymouth 5b 502

Marriages Sep 1872
GEARY   Julia
HERD   Robert
Plymouth 5b 491

In 1881, David GEARY is at school in Greenwich, and Michael is in the Navy, but I haven't spotted Dennis Jr.

The second marriage cert will give Robert's father's name and occupation: you can order it online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ for £7.

Hope this helps a little!

Hi,
Have you seen the entries on the National Archives site under Registers of Seamens Services?
There is a Robert Herd born 27 Sep 1819 Aberdeen and a Robert Herd born 17 April 1848 Clonakililty, Cork.
For a small fee you can see their records.
Best wishes

Do you have that address in New Zealand for "Jerry Herd", or was it just "Dunedin"?

http://gsb.id.au/gen/HallJames.htm
 - there is a mention here of Jeremiah Herd b. 1857 Sligo married Port Chalmers in NZ.

Hi
Yes I have Uncle Jerry as per the picture below.
I have found details for a Jeremiah Herd living in the Chalmers electorate in Opoho Nth East Valley as per the electoral roll;
married to Mary Ellen Butterfield in 1889 in NZ
and he died in 1919, aged 63 and is buried at Dunedin Northern Cemetry.
He was listed as a Seaman.

I'll certainly check out the B: Sligo aspect - thanks

This Jeremiah is one and the same as the one above. I had seen that list and have approached the owner for more detail. Unfortunately there was none available.
Thanks once again

On the 1881 census, Jeremiah HERD, b. c1857 Ireland, is listed as an "AB" in the Royal Navy on board HMS "Agincourt".  (RG11/5635/50/9)

I haven't found him on any of the the earlier censuses.
