Cormie
« on: Tuesday 08 March 05 22:02 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information on a James Cormie and family.

The 1881 census data is as follows:

Dwelling:   9 Old Smithhills
Census Place:   Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland
Source:   FHL Film 0203584     GRO Ref    Volume 573    EnumDist 76    Page 11
      Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
James CORMIE   M   68    M   Kelty, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Eating House Keeper
Martha CORMIE   M   54    F   Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
   Rel:   Wife
   Occ:   Eating House Keeper
Christina CORMIE   U   28    F   Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Eating House Keeper
Maggie CORMIE   U   25    F   Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Spooler

I am 99 % certain that the birthplace of James Cormie should be Kettle, Fife and that Kelty is a mis-transcription somewhere along the line.

There were other Cormies living in and around Renfrewshire, especially Greenock and Kilmacolm, could they be related to this one?

Also could Cormie House, Residential Home in Paisley have some connection to this family?

I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have earlier and/or later census information or any other information and/or connection whatsoever.

Unfortunately I only have the 1851 index but it does appear to confirm that James Cormie was in Paisley at that time

hi pal, had another wee look at your post

what was surprising me the most was the son john aged 12 on the 1851 census provided by falkyrn.

james married martha richmond on the 29/11/1847 in paisley(extracted from the igi's) groom aged 33, bride aged 23.

more closely looking at john turns up a mother called janet???

there is a sumitted entry for a marriage of james and janet mcdonald in paisley on the 26/5/1838

on the 1841 census the plot thickens.

1841 census- 2 st.mirren street, paisley

james...age 25...spirit dealer
janet...age 24
john...age 1
janet...age 35

john and janet(35) are born in renfrewshire

now across the street...

11 st.mirren street, paisley

john semple...age 30...spirit dealer...england
jean semple...age 30...renfrewshire
james semple...age 25...tanner
martha richmond...age 15...servant
john hart...age 30...spirit dealer

only children i could find extracted on the igi's for james and martha

cormie children

james...12/11/1848 christing
martha...28/7/1850 christing
margaret richmond...22/2/1855(please get this birth cert)
jessie...1/6/1857
william...30/9/1859

now the death cert for james, kettle, fife(this is a hunch) may say born 29/9/1811 son of john and christian

the death cert for martha may say(this is a hunch) born 25/10/1825, paisley daughter of james and martha mckendrick

always searching
