John Jackson - Park Gate, Irton
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 13:52 GMT (UK) »
My 3x gt. grandfather John Jackson died in 1844 at Park Gate, Irton, Cumberland. Please can anyone tell me where this is?

The cause of death on his death cert. is "Visitation of God". I'm assuming this was a sudden death which was a bit of a mystery. Does anyone know if the phrase had a more precise meaning? He died on 24th April but registration of the death is dated 30th May.

I'd be grateful for any help on this one. ??? ??? ???

There's a hamlet of Parkgate by Irton Park http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=311500&Y=500500&A=Y&Z=120
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thanks Geoff-E,

That has solved one little mystery.

There seems to have been something a bit strange about John Jackson's death. In addition to what I posted before his estate was not wound up until 1853 when his daughter Margaret Hird took things in hand and was granted Letters of Administration. John Jackson is described in various places (including the death cert.) as a "yeoman" so I am presuming he owned some land.
