Children with special needs-Sligo 1912- Institutions etc?
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 23:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Looking for some help in figuring out where Norah McCann, born 1912, lived after she was born - I believe she was my Grandfathers sister. He was born in 1921 but he never met her. I have a feeling she may have had special needs - was it customary at the time to "hide" people with special needs? If so, can you point me in the direction of institutions etc in Sligo that she may have lived? Also, how do I go about confirming this etc?

Many thanks in advance, fantastic board - already found lots of information.

Unfortunately The care of the children under the Irish-poor-Law 1850-1920 were confinded to workhouses.
The majority of these children were cared for within the workhouses until the abolition of the work house system.in the early 1920s
There are some records kept in The National Archives of Ireland.

Not sure if this is the right period but I thought I'd read about some religious orders looking after children- anyone know if this would be a possibility in this case?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for those suggestions - I'll have a look into those possibilities. Does anyone have any ideas for where I would begin?! :D
Thanks again.
