Anyone know about Partington-Olive Papermaking in Glossop?
« on: Wednesday 09 March 05 17:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Have just found out that my Partington "lot" had a papermaking business in Glossop - with a Mr Olive.

Does anyone know any details about this mill?

Or where to look??

Cheers
Keith

Hi Janan,

Thanks for those - it's amazing really - I come to a new region and act like a real beginner - where do I go from here??

I have used the directories for the regions I normally do - come out of region and am lost!!

Thanks for redirecting me  ;D ;D

Now - where's Derbyshire?  ??? ???

Cheers

Keith

Know how you feel Keith, I strayed into Notts the other day and felt the need to explain why I was there. As for Surrey it's not far from where I live but it felt like a foreign country when I made a brief visit a few weeks ago. Strangely I'm quite happy doing lookups in any county ??? ??? ::) Regards Jan

Hi Keith,

My ancestors were Papermakers just down the road at Chinley.  I don't recognise the company that you are looking for.  However a few thoughts.

In the 19th century papermakers used rags and waste from the cotton industry.  They also used a very similar bleaching process and so don't ignore the cotton industry in your search.

I know the Whitehall Mill at Chinley switched a couple of times between paper making and cotton dying.

Fifteen years ago I was in contact with Jean Stirk who was building a register of Papermakers.  I don't know if it still exists.  If you are back in the mid 19th century it is also worth looking for the records of "The Original Society of Papermakers" where you might locate an ancestor.

regards

Hi David,

Thanks for those comments.

Since writing this piece I have also been given Jean Stirks name - and she had lots of information for me - including some dates of my lot when they were in "The Original Society of Papermakers" - so if any one else has papermakers in their tree let me know and I will give you her address.

I have included some on my website here, you might like to take a look:

Thanks again for your interest

Cheers
