British Military - Jersey
« on: Friday 30 October 09 18:35 GMT (UK) »
Good evening,
my g.g.grandmother Elizabeth Simpson was born
St Helier Jersey 1819 - 1820.
Her father is listed as John Simpson.
He is listed as (Dead) on her marriage certificate which was
In the parish of St. Pancras London 1839.
Census returns state that she was of British Stock.

I would appreciate any information regarding John Simpson.
It is possible that he was with the British Military in Jersey.

Many thanks,
Vicki

Hi Vicki

At the moment I'm having difficulty in finding her baptism. Where did you get the date from as there doesn't appear to be any ES baptism in any Parish in Jersey.

Hi Stewart,
I have the marriage certificate for her dated 1839.
Her age appears to be 19.
Father John.
It is only later census returns she states:- Born Jersey
(British Stock)

I am trying to upload this certificate for Deciphering of her address in London, but have had to ask the technical team for help as it may be too big.

Many thanks for trying,
Vicki

Hi

I'm actually in the Societe Jersiaise Library at the moment. I wanted to look at a census return to see if it gave any clues. Apart from being slightly older everything suggests she was born in St Helier. However it doesn't confirm she was baptised here as I can find no records.

General Don did a Military Census in 1815 and there is only one soldier listed as Simpson but there is no Christian name so it probably isn't John.

Not sure where else to look.

Hi again Stewart,
I have this certificate in my hand and have just realised that Elizabeth's father is listed as Jo. Simpson (Dead)
Is it possible his name was Joseph ?

Also there were other Simpson families in Jersey.
If Jo. Simpson was not in the military, why was they in beautiful Jersey.
Did people 'Holiday' in those days ?

Many, many thanks for trying.

Hi Vicki

I think the military is the most likely option.

I'm not sure about the Jo bit. Could be Joshua, Joseph or John. Interestingly there is a baptism for a Thomas Simpson on 4th May 1825 in St Helier to a John Simpson and his wife Mary. John was a Bombadier in the Royal Artillery. Godparents were John Simpson, John Fleming and Mary Ringland. Could you tie Thomas with your Elizabeth?

Hi Stewart,
that sounds so promising.

I will have a look at the National Archives to see if I can find their passenger return to England.
Not sure yet if it will be there.

Elizabeth and Charles named their first child John, but Charles father was also named John. Sadly this child died within the first year. Their second child was named Edward
(my g.grandfather) but this forename has not came down from the paternal side.

I will have a snoop around to see what I can find.
Once again many thanks for your kind help.
Regards,
Vicki
