Happy Easter Brig,

The definition of ASSIZES in http://www.dictionary.com is -

1) One of the periodic court sessions formerly held in each
of the counties of England and Wales for the trial of civil
or criminal cases.

2) The time or place of such sessions.

There are four assizes in each year.

The two principal assizes
Winter Assizes, beginning in January
The Winter Assizes are regulated by Acts of 1876 and 1877
Summer Assizes, beginning at the end of May.
At these two assizes criminal and civil business is conducted in all the circuits.
The two other Assizes
Autumn Assizes
The Autumn Assizes are regulated by Acts of 1876 and 1877
Easter Assizes.
They are held for the whole of England and Wales, but for the purpose
of these assizes the work is to a large extent grouped, so that there is
not a separate assize for each county  Assizes in Ireland are similar.
