Marriage in Bally Black

David Reid married Eliza Jane Dunbar February 1878 in Bally Black.
A son William was born around 1879

Can anyone help me find more information about this family prior to their move to Scotland in  1880.

Irish marriage certificates don't contain as much as Scottish ones but will list their date and place of marriage, residences at time of marriage. whether or not of full age, marital status and occupations, fathers' names and occupations, names of 2 witnesses. Will not give birthdates or places, mothers' names.

          On 22 Feb 1878 David reid married Elizabeth J Dunbar in Ballyblack Presbyterian Church, Newtownards. David's father was also David and Elizabeth's father was Hans. William was born on 13 Feb 1879. (A slip of Aghadowey's finger).

            On the PRONI Will Search there is a Hans Dunbar who died in 1902 in Co. Down. A look may give you further information.

Ireland is a new area of research for me and your help is much appreciated.

Surely 'Hans'  Dunbar is an uncommon name and my first thought was German, or could it be Irish?

Hans was quite a common name in Ireland in 1800s and earlier.

The "Hans" name derives from the German "Johannes".

It was common in the Scottish HAMILTON family, granted extensive tracts of land in the North of Ireland by King James I.

Many folks named their offspring after the local bigwigs, to show respect and/or political allegiance, or to curry favour (and then show gratitude) over land grants and rents.

A James Gilmore DUNBAR was a small landholder at Drumfad, just over the hill from Ballyblack.

Elizabeth Jane (Dunbar) Reid caught Typhoid Fever and died age 26 in Larkhall Scotland.
From her death cert. I'm unable to decipher the maiden name of her mother and wonder if anyone can help.

I found her father's marriage and death (Hance Dunbar) and after looking through all the Elizabeth Jane's on the 'pilot family search' site  to connect  with Hance Dunbar 1858 Newtownards, nothing seemed close to matching with the name on the death cert.
