Cefn Gelly was the name of the farm which was tenanted and later bought by the Williams family. Like many farms it was also used in the second half of the 19th century to house industrial workers. The nearby Clyne Tinplate Works (on Cefn Gelly land) opened in 1879 and would have seen an influx of workers. There were also a number of small mines on the hillside above the farm.
