John James and Richard Turnbull
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 01:10 GMT (UK) »
The abovenamed came out to New Zealand in the early 1850's. John James came on the Charlotte Jane and Richard on the Fatima arriving 27.12.1851.

They lived together for a short time in Lyttelton and by the time of the census in 1855-56 they were living in Winchester St and Halswell respectively.

I'd like to find out where they lived in Lyttelton. I have tried the archives at the museum and spent time in the museum at Lyttelton but I'm still no further ahead. Can anybody suggest where else I could look?

For John James is there any address info on his 1853 marriage?

When you looked at the museum were there old pictures of the time? streets as we know them maynot have even existed..photos at timeframes may also help.

Early electoral rolls?? is 1855 first one, you mention census???

What was there occupation? could there be anything in papers/church records related to marriage/children etc..

Does Richard have a middle name..there aare several

Hello

I'm assuming you are looking for an actual address ?

Have to say, that most of the early rolls which I've seen for Lyttelton and Christchurch,  have only ever stated a "street" (that is, no street number is given).   Later, from around 1858-60, often the rolls give a description of the land holding (e.g. House / cottage on section 40, Hawkhurst Road - Lot No. ---  etc.) and also note whether the property is freehold (which may indicate that the occupier of the land/property, is the owner of same).

Circa 1850, Lyttelton was truly in its infancy.   Streets had been mapped out  prior to the arrival of the first settlers and some basic buildings had been erected in which to temporarily accommodate them until such time as they could provide habitation for themselves.   Whilst homes were being built, many of the single men elected to live on their land holdings,  in tents or crude "V" huts.    In 1852 there were only 500-odd residents, so a system of "street numbering" didn't occur until much later.

The Aotearoa New Zealand Centre at Christchurch Library,  can possibly help you with further information - especially if you are able to visit.   I've also obtained Lyttelton ratepayers lists c. 1858 from the Canterbury Museum which have quite a bit of detail - not sure though whether the lists go back further than that date ?
