(Bath) 1841/1851/1871 Census Please - James ROSSITER
« on: Tuesday 10 November 09 19:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am doing a one name study of the Rossiter family and am looking for information please about the parents, grandparents, siblings and children of James Rossiter born circa 1844 in Bath.

I found him in the 1881 UK Census here:-
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_2504084&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99

He married Sarah Ann Gay in the June Quarter of 1866 at Bedminster.

Any information would be greatly appreciated please. TIA.

Best wishes

Hi Captain2,

Many thanks for that.

Interesting that the children listed are different and so much of the birthplace data varies between censuses.

I found an IGI record which gives John Rossiter as James's father and gives James & Sarah's wedding date as May 14th 1866 at St Paul, Bedminster.

Wonder if any other Rossiters were baptised or married at that church? Maybe one of James's siblings perhaps.

From FreeBMD, I have printed out all the Rossiter births at Bedminster between 1838 and 1899 and will compare them with my database to see which ones I have not got. Hopefully, I can find a link to James's family.

Best wishes

Hi Captain2,

Thanks again for that.

IGI gives father as Charles Gay but no details of mother. This looks like a good match.

BTW, I found his entry in the 1881 UK Census which closely matches your 1870 entry:-
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_2475767&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99

Just wondering if James born 1844 died before 1881 and this entry is of his widow & daughter Kate.

What do you think?

Best wishes

1851 Census FOLIO HO107/1945 East Street, Bedminster, Somerset.
Charles Gay. 31 Head. Rope & Twin Spinner employing 3 men & 6 boys.
born. Bedminster, Somerset
Christiana Gay. 33. Wife. born Bedminster, Somerset
Mary Ann Gay. 8. Daughter - Scholar. born Bedminster Somerset
Sarah Ann Gay. 6. Daughter - Scholar. born Bedminster Somerset
Henry Gay. 3. Son. born Bedminster Somerset
Maria Gay. 1. Daughter. born Bedminster Somerset

You have the 1861 for Sarah-Ann, looks like her mother Christiana may have died before 1861.

Still not having much luck with James, I have found 'a' James born 1844 employed as a servant in the Bedminster area, gives his birth-place as Cheddar. He is 17 in the 1861.

We need some more 'eyes' here ...

Hi Captain2,

Thanks for that.

I have John born 1844 in Cheddar in my database but unfortunately I do not know his parents.Does the census showing him show his parents please?

As far as I know Bedminster Registration District does not cover Cheddar. I think Cheddar falls under the Chard Registration District.

Best wishes
