Garden Family of Old Machar
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 14:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am new to this and would like to find out more about my family that I am researching. The name is James GARDEN and Elizabeth COBBAN. They married in Old Machar in 1806 and had the following children: George, William, William, James, John, Robert and Helen.

I am having trouble finding who James father and mother are. All I know is that he was born about 1782/1783. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Roslyn Garden
Australia.

Hi Roslyn, welcome to rootschat :)

Do you have the family in census records?
They may be at Gilcomston short loanings in 1841

http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

If James died after 1855 then his parents should be named on his death certificate. If you search the Scotland's People website there are 4 possible deaths for a James Garden birth year 1782 +/- 10 years dying after 1855. Prior to that there are 6 deaths between 1827 (Helen's conception) and 1854.
There is a will on SP for a James Garden at Short Loanings Gilcomston in 1854, possibility although occupation is different.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Have you viewed the marriage entry itself or just the index entry? They can sometime have extra information such as father's name, residence, occupation.

Hi Kirsty,

Thanks ever so much for this. I have James and Elizabeth in the 1841 Census but he does not appear in the 1851. If he does then I have not found him.  I am not a member of Scotlands People but I know relatives who are so they may be able to check. This James Garden and Elizabeth Cobban are not my direct line but belong to someone else who is trying to connect them to our line of the Garden family. I am trying to help them out.

I will let them know what you have found and they may then search Scotlands People to find what they are looking for.

Thank you very much for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

Regards Roslyn.

Try 30/09/1779, Old Machar, Father :- John Garden
Gros Data :- 168/B00 0110 0102  on Scotlands People.

Regards

Malky (with loads of Gardens from Aberdeen in the family) but not this one, I don't think, so far.

Malky,

Thanks for your reply. I was looking for this family for someone else.

My husbands line of the family come from the following areas, Belhelvie, Chapel of Garioch, Kemnay, Kintore, Clatt,  Daviot and other areas. He has ministers in his family but a majority of them are farmers.

Could you let me know who your Garden families are please.

My husband descends directly from George Garden and Elspet Forbes.

Cheers Roslyn

Roslyn, do you have any information (dates, location etc) for the marriage of your George Garden to Elspet Forbes.

Malky,

George Garden was born about 1606 Banchory, Aberdeen son of Arthur Garden and Elspet Gordon. He married Elspet Forbes on 25.12.1636 in Belhelvie, Aberdeen.

They had 4 children: Alexander, John, William (my husbands line) and Thomas.

George was the Minister for Clatt and the son Thomas took over from his father.

I have lots more information if you need.

Regards Roslyn.

Interestingly, Charles Garden was born in Aberdeen in 1840, but died and was buried in 1842 in Belhelvie Church Yard.
