pembroke mary rogers 1819
« on: Thursday 12 November 09 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Mary Rogers born about 1819 in Monkton area married to James rogers also 1819.  Can anyone help I am now stuck.  family oral history stated that My Great Great Grandmother Maria Cole was welsh speaking from Martletwy, but the census show that actually she was born in Pembroke, probably bankers row!!.  Her parents were Mary rogers and James Rogers of Monkton, but I don't know what Mary's maiden name was so am now stuck going back any further and I have found a James rogers working on a farm in 1841 but don't know if its the same person and not enough info to go on.    I am sort of hoping that I can find a link to Martletwy as that is what the family always thought knowing she was born in bankers row is just too depressing a thought.  If anyone can help me It would be much appreciated.

When was Maria born, if after Sept 1837 it just might be easiest to get her birth certificate, it should show her mothers maiden name.

there is a marriage reg Pembroke district 1841 - there is James Rogers on the same page as Mary Cole and mary griffiths - if you purchased the marriage cert it would give  names and occupations of fathers of bride and groom

So was Maria Cole the illegit daughter of James and mary Rogers????

Maria Cole married a henry cole but was rogers first.  the census says Mary was born around 1819.  But the I suppose Mary might have been a cole herself and then her daughter married a cole as well!

Thank you for your suggestions, I am going to a family history day on Saturday at the local church maybe I can get some more information there.  My list of birth certificates I now need is growing ever longer.  My mother asked me to restart the family tree investigation last week we have started and stopped a few times over the years,  I think we must be a bit odd cause we have always followed the matriachial branches.   :D

Ten years ago with the help of my Gran and Great Aunt we completed a branch back to 1590 but that was much easier as it was Alderney and linked to Trinity House records.  This seems much harder some how.

I  have just been thinking about the 1841 marriage and suspect that maybe she was Mary Cole.  Thank you

From my index of Pembroke St Michael 1813 to 1839 I note
17 June 1821 Mary to Richard and Ann Rogers of Calket a labr baptized by C. Phillips

I also note the baptism of a Mary Rogers at Pwllcrochan in 1819. The LDS website suggests baptized 27 Jan 1819 to William and Elizabeth Rogers

The nearest I can find to your requirements again from the LDS website shows
11 Jan 1818 James to Henry & Elizabeth Rogers baptized at Nash with Upton.
The next nearest being
16 Oct 1816 James to Mariah Rogers baptized at Monkton St Nicholas.

((Dare I suggest if James works out to be Maria's father this is where her name came from))

It appears to me that James Rogers married Mary Cole in the 2nd Qtr of 1841 in the Pembroke Registration District
A Maria Cole was baptized in 1843 and I note from the LDS website
24 Dec 1843 Maria  to George & Lettice Cole baptized at Monkton St Nicholas

A George Cole was baptized at Monkton in 1815. A George Cole married a Lettice Watkins in the 4th Qtr of 1841 in the Pembroke Registration District, probably Monkton St Nicholas at a guess.

This is the only Maria Cole baptized in South Pembrokeshire areas of your interest, but caution must prevail and the P.R.’s of Monkton St Nicholas must be checked to confirm George and Lettice as parents.

It may be worth you referring to
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Pemtax1.html

Where a number of references to the Coles of Monkton are listed, From other surnames listed you may well recognize the author of this listing.

My moneys on james son of Mariah,  My gran was maise Maria, but it was always pronounced Maise Mariah!!
In the census of 1851 the family of James and Maria liven in Priory House Monkton which is next to St Nicholas Church.  Thank you so much I think this is a good enough bet to fork out the readies for a birth certificate.  The family history day I am going to is in St Marys church Pembroke and the vicar has also promised us a private showing of the church records from the safe, maybe he could arrange the same for St Nicholas Monkton.  this is getting very exciting again!!

Since it is I that index'd ALL of Pembroke St Mary and Pembroke St Michael Parish Registers, for the period 1711 to circa 1950 for Roger, it is easier to for me to do a search on your behalf than you try to look through the photocopies of the parish registers held in the vestery. (See Pembrokeshire lookups on this forum)
Roger does not hold the parish registers for Monkton St Nicholas, the original registers for this parish are at the Rec Off. I believe the photocopies that where with the St Nicholas incumbant have been lost. The above said I index'd a document called "The Register of the Three Parish" for the period 1711 to 1744. This covers Pembs St Mary, Pembs St Michael and Monkton St Nicholas, but does not say which entry is for which parish, however in many cases I have been able to work out which page goes to which parish.
Roger does have a full copy of my work on Pembroke Parish Registers, he may well have that there on the day. Also Dyfed FHS will hold the more important index's that you will need to consult to prove what I said in my previous.
Unfortunately I was already committed to exhibiting my Pembrokeshire free lookups at the Swansea Maritime Museum on the same day (14th).

If you reside local to Pembroke you are most welcome to visit me at home behind Orange Gardens to look at what I hold.

I was at Monkton Cemetery today and noticed the following headstone for your interest.

Thank you Oriel,  Yes I am from Pembroke,  Just wondering if is you that is doing the talk at the foundry tonight on Pembrokes Martime History,  i was going to attend but the weather is far to bad to venture out and I suppose foundry house is at risk of flooding.  Its a shame you wont be there tommorrow, I have just phoned my mum and she says she thinks she probably met you last year when she went to the family history day.  I would be lovely to see your records some time when  it is convenient,

Again thank you for all you help.
