Thornton near Pocklington
« on: Thursday 10 March 05 22:06 GMT (UK) »
Susannah Smith was born in 1832 and spent some of her early years in Thornton, SW of Pocklington.  The family have a needlework sampler which has the "caption" in needlework - "Susannah Smith, Thornton School, 1847".  At 15 I suspect she was too old to be a scholar, and could have been a pupil teacher or had some other connection with the school.  (I tried uploading the image but gave up after 20 minutes.)
Does anyone know if the school is still there?  In fact, does anyone know the village?

Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.

As a follow-up, the East Riding archives only have the school records from 1870, so perhaps a new school was built under the 1870 Act.

Hi,

This is probably too late now but...

I used to live at Thornton as a girl and know the place very well indeed.  The school was opposite the church and my mother used to attend there in the 1940's.

Sadly the school closed well before the 1960's when I was born and my  mother then went to a school in Pocklington.

The place is now a private residence.

I don't actually know when the school was built though so it is possible there was an earlier building.

Regards
Evaline
