MOIR and SHAW
« on: Friday 13 November 09 06:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm looking for information on Alexander and Isabella (maiden name Moir ??) MOIR of Banff Sct, who went to NZ.
known children:
John born abt 1844, Isabella William born 1847 ( my gg aunt), Jane born 1850 and Margaret born 1853 all children at Mortlach Banff.
The family MAY have arrived on board the " Silistria" on the 19 Apr 1863
I believe Alexander may have died bef 1903 at Dunedin, I know nothing abt this family except for Isabella.

Isabella William MOIR married Duglad SHAW at 16 Oct 1873 at St Andrew's Dunedin. (These 2 are the ggrandparents of noted NZ poet Helen Lillian SHAW/HOFFMAN.) Isabella and Dugald moved to Timaru, where they became Grocers and Provisions Merchants under the name "Messrs Shaw and Moir" and had 4 children. I have a fair bit of info for these 2, but nothing for Alexander and the rest of his family.

Any help most appreciated
Regards
Andrea

Hi Annie,
I have never seen a 2nd name used on any thing ie. births of children, 1851 census etc.. So possibly not.

1871 #6174 Jane to Thomas Hussey

1876 #478 Margaret to William Graham

Lots for John

You might have to google some possibilities!

Hello  Andrea

Mmm ... not sure the Margaret MOIR (married Wm. GRAHAM 1876) is the daughter of "your" Alexander MOIR.   :-\

The marriage took place in Wellington - but she, (known as "Maggie"),  is described as being the eldest  daughter of Alexander MOIR of Dunedin. ??

Hi Andrea

*  What makes you think that the parents and siblings of Isabella William MOIR, also came to New Zealand ?

*  The "Silistria" voyage 1863 ... have you got the passenger list ?   (Sorry, there doesn't seem to be one available amongst New Zealand resources.)

I cannot see likely deaths in NZ for (the parents) Isabella and Alexander (unless Isabella was born c. 1816 ?) :

Good morning all,
Sorry about the wait, we have 3 sons who all play sport on weekends and need "mums  taxi" constantly all weekend  :-\
I thought I would answer the latest lot of questions in one post.
Lucy2: No I haven't checked the 61 census, I found them on the 51 census :

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MOIR Alexander Head M M 29 Farmer Of 22 Acres 1 Girl Banffshire - Mortlach
MOIR Isabella Wife M F 38 Banffshire - Mortlach
MOIR John Son U M 7 Banffshire - Mortlach
MOIR Isabella Dau U F 4 Banffshire - Mortlach
MOIR Jane Dau U F 9m Banffshire - Mortlach
WATT Isabella Servnt U F 19 House Servant Aberdeenshire - Cabrach(Originally: Banffshire - Cabrach)
Page: 128/4
PROCTOR Elisabeth Servnt U F 12 Farm Servant Banffshire - Mortlach

I found an entry for MOIR at the NZ Archives for a family with the name MOIR, I am really unsure as to whether they are mine. Something is not quite right.
Regards
Andrea
