Millicent Hart Potter - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 13 November 09 10:03 GMT (UK) »
Friend has family Bible with this name inside- Millicent Hart Potter

Have found in indexes what seem to be references to the same person-
Free BMD- birth- Millicent Hart Potter July/Sept.1846 Wandsworth district
1851 census (Surrey) Melicent Potter age 4
1861 census (Surrey) Millicent Potter age 14 born Surrey?
1871 census (Surrey) Millicent Potter age 24 born Surrey?
1881 ?
1891 ?
1901 census (Sussex) Millicent Hart Potter age 54 born London?

Friend's great-grandmother was Mary POTTER born c1867 in Surrey or London? who married 1890 David COLE. Children: Elizabeth (c1892), Caleb (c1893), Ada M. (c1898), Andrew (1900).
Millicent Hart Potter is believed to be Mary's mother and family story is that there is a Jewish connection.

Can anyone help with census records for Millicent so we can establish that Mary's mother was Millicent (too many Mary Potters to get a birth certificate at the moment) and who Millicent's family were?

Hi

1861/71/1901 give Millicent's pob as Balham, Surrey or London; 1851 gives pob as Streatham, which is next door to Balham.

There is in 1891:

Thanks so much, Gaie. Yorkshire is certainly a surprise. I'd only been able to find her in index to 1851/1861/1871/1901 census but without having full details birthplace just Surrey/London. By 1891 census Mary Potter (her daughter?) is married and living in Kent. We suspected that Millicent was unmarried but connection to 3 Elam children is also a mystery at this point.

I too think the Elam children are the children of Millicent's sister maria Potter - but in 1901 census she is married to Joseph Taylor- but the children are Elam

Gets better and better- will take me a few minutes to digest but I found Elam family in 1881 census:
1 Gloucester St., Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire
Joseph ELAM 56 Mirfield Yorks. insurance collector (Baptist Local Preacher)
wife Maria ELAM 36 Balham Surrey
son Robert M. ELAM 20 Sheffield merchants clerk unemployed
son Charles H.C. ELAM 19 Sheffield joiner (apprentice)
dau. Mary ELAM 16 Sheffield
From the ages of these children and the ones in 1891 it's possible that Maria was Joseph's 2nd wife.

From memory I think no father listed on Mary Potter's marriage certificate but will have to get friend to check with her relatives in England to verify.
