William CHISSUS (1828)
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 08:25 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on William Chissus (1828), born in Eton Wick, Buckinghamshire, England, who emigrated to Ontario some time in the 1870's.

His wife was Anne Sophia Buckland (1836) and the children I have, all born in England were:

William (1854-1910)
Charles Sinclair (1856-1938)
Fanny Maria (1858)
Amelia Ellen (1859)
Richard (1869)

The family may have settled at some time in Michigan, USA.

Thanks

Hi skull,

What a name with so many spelling variations! I've found them as Chissus, Chissers and Chissius so far...
Are you just looking for information on William sr or his children as well?

CHISSERS, William d 31 Mar 1877 Paris, Brant Co, Ontario at 49 yrs 8 mos of tuberculosis, b London England, informant William Chissers, son, Paris, Ont
I can't see Ann on an 1881 Ontario census, but the children are all in Paris, Ontario at that time.  His sons William and Charles moved to Oakland County Michigan in the 1890's.
Here's a free site for Michigan information. I think William Jr's death is here:

Not sure what documents you have access to, there's quite a few on Ancestry.

Hope this helps,
cg

Amelia Ellen is on the 1881 Canadian census working in the household of Sarah Hamilton.  She married July 1, 1885 at Paris, Ontario to Samuel Dixon, 24, b. Paris, Ont., tailor, s/o John dixon and Elizabeth Watson.

Fanny married at 22 to Bruce McGinis, 2, b. London, Eng. living Paris, Ontario, teamster, on 6 April 1880 at Brantford.  Ancestry indexes her as Fanney M. Chessers.  The marriage record shows her birth as Windsor England and her mother as Mary Ann (that was also the mother of the groom's name).

Charles Sinclair married at 22 (farmer) to Mary A. Thompson, 23, on 18 April 1878 at Paris.  Sister Amelia a witness.

Willliam married at 25 (labourer) to Harriet goddard 2 Dec 1880 at Paris, Ontario.  Marriage record included mother's name as Anne Buckland
William married at 35, b. Buckinghamshire, widower, gardener, living at Oakland Lake Michigan to Theresa Gerndt, 30, b. Harrisburgh, Nov 19, 1890 at Paris, Ontario

Richard on the 1881 census was living in Paris Brant with his brother Charles and family.

From this link you can search the 1881 and 1891 Canadian census material and from this link
http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html
the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census.

I looked for Ann Sopia's death or perhaps remarriage but couldn't find anything.   This entry from a google search
deaths
Sophia Ann BROOMHALL died 1 Dec 1900 at age 63 of Brights disease. ..... Born in Surrey England; informant William CHISSUS of Paris Ontario. ...
homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/deaths.htm - Cached - Similar

might indicate that she remarried but the entry on the 1891 census shows her as widowed and the death record for this lady has no informant listed - just raises questions.

Debbie
Amended to add
The above lists the death of Harriet Chissus with William as the informant and not related to Sophia Ann Chissus.  Her death record is still elusive..

Ancestry has some issues with the 1901 census - I thought it had been fixed but maybe not for all images.  This is from automated genealogy and someone has linked it to the 1911 census.  He is still listed as single in the 1911 but I just saw a birth for a daughter Verna Mae, Mar 23 1908 with mother Lillian Snider - will check for a marriage.  Not sure what he is an inmate of in 1901 census.
