Christchurch Baptism - George Kendall (17xx)
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 16:35 GMT (UK) »
I just received a photo of the 1756 Sopley parish marriage register entry of "George Kendel of the parish of X/Church and Mary Peckham of this parish" etc., from the HRO.

I believe George lived to 1797, which would suggest his baptism was sometime between about 1700 and 1740.

If anyone has access to records of that vintage, I'd be grateful if you could take a look.

Regards,
David

Also pointed out on your other thread, being "of Christchurch" at the time of marriage does not indicate that the person was born in the parish.   :(  If only...................

Only three weeks residence in a parish was required to be described as of the parish.

True, but it's probably worth a look. If nobody here has access to the Christchurch records, I'll have to order a copy from the the LDS FHL, which will take a month or more :(

I've only got a transcript, but George does not appear on it that I can see. :(

Hi Nell,

Could you tell me which transcripts you have? I've been searching the HRO archive, but can't find the parish records for Christchurch (67M88).

Thanks!
David

Um, can you clarify what you mean?  It is listed in the catalogue, but the records are not available to view online.  You would have to visit Winchester to be able to see the contents of this catalogue reference, which only relates to material dated 1854 onwards.

I have some parish register transcripts, one of which is Christchurch.

The material catalogued under 67M88 for Christchurch Parish is indeed dated 1854 and onward, and does not include parish records. Every other parish I've researched has a corresponding Parish Registers item (i.e., 67M88/PR) usually with microfiche.

The admin history for 67M88 says the parish is "ancient", but I've done every HRO search I can think of and, other than 182M88 (parish register negatives 1584-1643), can't locate Christchurch parish registers in the HRO archive.

If someone knows the reference number, or where I should be looking, I'd appreciate the tip!

I found the baptism of Mary Peckham in Sopley in 1733. Now I'm trying to find George Kendall (Kindle), around the same time, and I have a feeling that southward (ChCh, Burton, Highcliffe, Hinton, Milton) is worth a look before heading to Dorset.

Regards,
David

It would seem that the original registers have not been deposited at Winchester.  The guide I have implies that they are held on microform both at Winchester and at Dorset Record Office in Dorchester (Christchurch was transferred to Dorset in 1974).

There is an item listed in the Winchester catalogue:

182M88  Christchurch parish register negatives (1584-1643)

Under reference M67 (fragile film), Christchurch registers are included.
Christchurch

88P/1/1 : christenings, 1584-1590
88P/2/1 : christenings, marriages and burials, 1633-1643
88P/2 : christenings, marriages and burials, 1682-1804
88P/3 : christenings and burials, 1805-1812
88P/4 : christenings, 1813-1838

It also includes Burley & Hinton Admiral.

Microfilm M68 contains these records amongst others:
Christchurch
88P/5 : christenings, 1838-1872
88P/6: christenings, 1872-1875
88P/13 : marriages, banns, 1754-1767
88P/14 : marriages, banns, 1767-1779
88P/15 : marriages, banns, 1779-1803
88P/16 : marriages, banns, 1803-1812

Microfilm M69 is catlogued thus, with other parishes:
Christchurch
88P/16 (part): marriages, banns, 1803-1837*
88P/17: marriages, 1837
88P/18: marriages, 1837-1857
88P/19: marriages, 1857-1875
88P/20 (part): marriages, 1875
88P/34: burials, 1813-1846
*The first 17 pages of this register covering 1803-5 are missing due to damage caused during use. Pages 41 and 42 are also missing

Microfilm M70 includes these records:
88P/35 (part): burials, 1846-1875
88P/ : banns, 1834-1869
88P/ : banns, 1869-1875
Burial transcript, 1682-1804

That's the best I can find. :-\
